Busy Week for the Fire Department

Stewart's store building would now be an unsightly wreck of crumbling brick walls and distorted corrugated iron flapping in the wind, a skeleton on a prominent corner of Washington avenue, were it not for the quick and prompt action of Golden's Volunteer Fire department Thursday morning at 5 o'clock.

Golden's night watchman had gone past the store 5 minutes previously without noticing smoke, so the fire, of unknown origins, came up quickly. The Volunteer Fire Department responded quickly and doused the fire. Damages to the store amounted to about $650. A laundry had recently moved into the center part of the building. Their equipment incurred about $25 in damage, and they also lost "a considerable amount of unwashed laundry which had just been received at the plant was destroyed."

The Fire Department was also called to the Golden Waffle Inn that week to extinguish a brush fire. The Waffle Inn was located across the road from the Rock Rest Lodge.

On the same afternoon, the fire department boys responded to a call at the Steve Rogers farm place just east of Golden on 44th avenue, when a hay stack and a part of their cow barns were burned..... Residents are urged to use every caution with matches, cigarettes, camp fires, and when burning weeds, due to the unusual and continued dry spell.
