The August 28, 1919 Colorado Transcript reported that two burglaries had taken place during the previous week.
Luther Hertel’s clothing store, located at 1224 Washington Avenue, was entered through the alley door. The burglars used an auger to drill through the door. They picked one key lock and broke two deadbolts, then stole more than $6000 worth of men’s clothing. Mrs. Gertrude Bell, who owned a house on 13th Street, noticed the open door at 6:30AM. She notified Mr. Hertel, who in turn contacted Sheriff Jones. The merchandise was uninsured.
Mr. Hertel, of course, keenly feels his great loss, but he is not discouraged, and will replace his stock as soon as possible and will carry on the business with his customary vim and enterprise.

That same week, a burglar stole drugs and a hypodermic syringe from Dr. Earl Kemble, whose office was in the Rubey bank building. A few days later, the syringe was found a block away, but the drugs were missing.
The only idea offered in a solution to the mystery is that some “hop-head” was in search of his favorite “dope.”
