In the summer of 2023, the Astor House was being gutted and updated for use by Foothills Art Center. After a century and a half of continuous use, the building had accumulated a lot of surprises. The construction crew unearthed pottery sherds, old bottles, snarls of ancient electrical wires, scorch marks from old fires, and inscrutable notes written on boards.

In removing the walls in the third floor attic, the crew was startled to find a woman staring out at them. Who was she? Was it a wedding photo, a pin-up girl, an art print? We’ll probably never know.
