Mausoleum for Golden Cemetery Proposed To City Council

Colorado Transcript - April 19, 1962

During the spring of 1962, City Council was considering a proposal by an El Paso, Texas firm to add a mausoleum to the Golden cemetery. A salesman approached the City in April of that year. He explained that, while his company would take a cut of all crypt sales, the City would net about $7,000/year (provided that enough people died and bought crypts).

Maintenance Fund Problem For Cemetery

Colorado Transcript - May 3, 1962

The cemetery fund tended to run at a deficit, and the idea of finding a new revenue source was appealing. At that time, only graves that had been sold with an additional charge for "perpetual care" were seeded, watered, and mowed. This made for a strange hodge-podge of mown and unmown graves, and it was a headache to track which "residents" had paid and which had not. Ideally, the City would have preferred to scrap the differentiated system and just care for the whole cemetery equally--but there wasn't enough money in the cemetery fund to do that.

Mausoleum Negotiations Will Proceed

Colorado Transcript - May 17, 1962

When the salesman came calling, with promises of extra revenue, Council had to consider the matter. A subcommittee of Councilors studied the proposal, talked with managers of other cemeteries in the area, and in the end, concluded that they would be better off raising the rates for all cemetery plots.

Mausoleum Proposal Is Dropped

Colorado Transcript - June 14, 1962

By the mid-1990s, the perpetual care fund was finally generating enough revenue to fund care for the cemetery as a whole.
