Press Forward is a coalition of funders who support local news. As their home page says, "As local newsrooms have disappeared across America, communities have witnessed fading civic engagement, eroding social bonds, surging misinformation, and dwindling governmental accountability."
I plan to apply for a grant to support and enlarge GoldenToday's coverage. I would like to include comments from my readers. If you feel so inclined, please feel free to send me a sentence or two describing how GoldenToday--
- Strengthens our sense of community by sharing news of local events
- Helps hold City government accountable by publicizing their actions and decisions
- Heightens awareness of Golden's arts & cultural organizations
- Supports local non-profit organizations
- Serves the local news needs of the Golden community
Basically, if GoldenToday disappeared, would you know where else to find the information we provide?
You can send any comments you would like to contribute to me (Barb Warden) at barb@goldentoday.com.
Thanks!
Barb
A Thank You Note from CAG

Scenes from the 2024 Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive - Volunteers sorting and shelving the community food donations.
To Our Golden Friends:
We are deeply thankful for your participation in this year's Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive to aid CAG's Food Pantry in Golden. Your kindness and generosity have filled the tables of those facing food insecurity in our community with nourishment and healthy meals. Together, we collected over 23,000 pounds of food, roughly 12% of all the food CAG distributed in 2023.
On behalf of the CAG Food Pantry and Thrift Store's staff, volunteers, and our clients, we thank you. Please know how much your donations mean and the significant difference you have made in the lives of hundreds of families in the Golden area through your participation in Stamp Out Hunger.

6:30-8:30PM Eating, Drinking, and Railroading with Buffalo Bill

Steve Friesen has published four books and numerous articles about American history. He retired from a 40-year museum career in 2017, after serving as director of the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave for 22 years, located right here in Golden. This month’s program is based upon his latest book Galloping Gourmet: Eating and Drinking with Buffalo Bill, released in December 2023.
William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody was a hunter, frontiersman, and showman. Less well known was the fact that Cody was as comfortable eating at Delmonico’s in New York City as dining on wild game around a campfire. He dined with kings, queens, princes and presidents, as well as notables including Thomas Edison, Oscar Wilde, and James McNeill Whistler. He was even an innovator on the culinary scene, opening the first Mexican restaurant east of the Mississippi (in New York City), introducing popcorn to the European continent, and promoting American cocktails in England.
In this presentation, Friesen will showcase Buffalo Bill’s life as a gourmet, as well as the important role that the railroad played in his life. “Buffalo Bill’s Wild West and Congress of Rough Riders of the World” traveled throughout the U.S. during its heyday, with America’s railroads doing the job of transporting the show’s many aspects including animals, tents and more. It’s a story filled with intrigue, excitement, even a train wreck—with this presentation weaving railroading and gourmand together into a truly “Galloping Gourmet” of a program!
Admission: $20 Adults. Ages 21+ only. Admission includes 2 beverages of your choice (beer, wine or soda) and snacks. Presentation begins promptly at 7:00pm, bar opens at 6:30pm. Tickets

Golden History: A Dam Break Above Golden

Flood escaping through a 60′ wide breach in the dam at Georgetown – click to enlarge
68 Years Ago
The June 7, 1956 Colorado Transcript described a June 4th flood on Clear Creek. “Flood waters roared down Clear Creek canon Monday afternoon after a dam broke below Georgetown when a spillway collapsed. The flood washed out several bridges, sending debris downstream, took out part of Highways 6 and 40 and caused much property damage in Idaho Springs and that area.”

Fortunately, the canyon widens as it approaches Golden, and the damage here was minimal. The baseball fields in Lions Park and about half a block of 10th Street were covered with water.
City personnel were warned of the impending flood at 11AM and the crest reached us at 3:02PM. According to the City Engineer, the water rose a full foot at the Ford Street bridge between 2:57 and 3:02PM. The flow went from 6.1 miles per hour to 10.4 miles per hour.
The Transcript reported that the flood carried debris from washed out bridges and parts of automobiles. We were in the process of building a new bridge at Ford Street that summer, and the City was very concerned that no harm should come to it. Street and Water Department employees were ready with poles to dislodge any debris that threatened the bridge, but none accumulated. They attributed that to the increased span (10 feet wider) and height (1 foot higher) of the new bridge.
June is always an exciting time to watch the Creek! The USGS provides near-real time information about the flow of Clear Creek.
The Golden Transcript (originally called the Colorado Transcript) has been publishing since 1866. The Golden History Museum has been working on digitizing the historic issues. You’ll find old Transcripts online at coloradohistoricnewspapers.org.
