6-8PM Opening Reception: English Paper Piecing and WILD! SAQA Regional Exhibition

Join us this evening to celebrate our two latest exhibits: SAQA Wild! and English Paper Piecing.

SAQA WILD!
NE Gallery
A collection of Art Quilts submitted by Studio Art Quilt Associates members from an invitation to let their imaginations take them on a journey to a WILD place – ANY wild place. The exhibit includes pieces from 30 artists, many from our own state of Colorado!! WILD is a small word, with BIG opportunity especially when you live in the area of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. These art quilts use texture, shape, color and a multitude of techniques to take you to their WILD places.
A book in our Gift Shop can be purchased to help you share the exhibit with far away friends, but the quilts are so much better in person, where the textures are so readily apparent.
ENGLISH PAPER PIECING
Main Gallery
Bravo to all of the English Paper Piecing (EPP) quilters taking part in this challenge.
In this call for entry, stitchers were asked to create a quilt that incorporates their favorite motifs: fussy cut, floral, Millefiori style, to name a few. After all the entries came in by May 31st, the jury selected 37 quilts which fill the main gallery with color and beautiful examples of traditional hexagon patterns such as tributes to Grandmother's Flower Garden, diamond patterns and even art quilts created from hexagons. But hexagons are not the only shapes used in EPP! These hand pieced works of art use a multitude of shapes to create Millefiori patterns, starbursts, stars and crosses, and tumbling blocks to name a few. Fabric choices and fussy cutting turn patterns into kaleidoscope and mosaics of fun adventure as you discover animals, flowers and other objects in the shapes. You'll be amazed at the incredible work presented in this exhibit!

Golden History: Coming in for the Winter

Drawing of Golden created by the Hayden survey in 1869

The October 25, 1860 Western Mountaineer reported that miners were coming to Golden for the winter.
For the last few weeks we notice that many miners, and a large number of families are coming to Golden City to spend the winter, fearing to trust the severity of the mountains. This has caused quite a lively business in completing houses that were before commenced, and in preparations for building new ones. Several who are still engaged in mining operations, and intend carrying them on during the winter, have been down and made preparations for locating their families here.

Golden City possesses many advantages as a winter rendezvous, being located directly at the outlet from the mines, and having good schools, and a quiet and orderly society, which is a great desideratum, especially for men with families.
Many thanks to an anonymous donor for sponsoring Golden History Moments for the month of October.

Golden Optimists and IRC Denver: Pedaling Towards Hope and Community
By Mariam Naibi / Edited by Hanna Simmons
International Rescue Committee
In September 2021, Suzy Stutzman, a Board Member of Golden Optimists, reached out to the IRC in Denver with an offer to set the wheels of change in motion for a seemingly “golden” opportunity.
Golden Optimists, a non-profit organization located in Golden, Colorado, embodies the true spirit of community and dedication. Operated entirely by volunteers who share a passion for cycling, the organization collects and refurbishes used bicycles. These bicycles are then transformed into sustainable modes of transportation and sources of outdoor recreation, adventure, and joy for individuals in need... Read more...
