6-10PM Powder7 Season Kickoff Party - Norse & Gnar @ Buffalo Rose

Powder7 is hosting its annual ski season kickoff bash in downtown Golden at the Buffalo Rose! This year features a Norse theme to properly appeal to Ullr and other snow spirits for the sickest winter possible. Join us for live music, a raffle benefiting Friends of CAIC, a wicked costume contest (if you were there last year, you know what we’re talking about), and a ski sacrifice to Ullr. Bring your dead skis you don’t know what to do with and donate them for Ullr’s appeal. Don’t worry—these skis won’t go to waste.  They’ll repurpose them. Free entry, no tickets or RSVP required.

Backup Plans

Golden Cemetery, 2021 - Photo by Barb Warden

For the past several years, I've been giving cemetery tours as a fundraiser for the Golden History Museum. This year's tours are scheduled for Saturday the 17th. Unfortunately, they're sold out! You might try calling the museum (303-278-3557) to see if they have a wait list.

Here's some good news for those of you who like cemetery tours but weren't able to get tickets: I'm going to be giving a Cemetery Highlights tour as part of tomorrow's Coffee with Councilors. Join Councilors Evans and Vitry from 10-11AM to learn about the Golden Cemetery from the staff who support it. I'll finish up by introducing you to some of the cemetery's most famous residents. Meet at the cemetery office (map). Here's the best part: it's free!

Golden History: Gas Masks–Cheap!

As army gas masks are obtainable from the war department at a very slight cost, it was voted to purchase two for the use of the fire department.
The Colorado Transcript
- October 9, 1919

In Europe, World War I lasted for more than four years--from August of 1914 to November of 1918. America's involvement in the war was relatively short: we entered the war in April of 1917 and the Armistice (ceasefire) was declared in November of 1918.

Because the U.S. government had anticipated a longer war requiring a bigger army, it built up an enormous stockpile of military equipment. When the war ended, the government needed to reduce the stockpile. At the same time, they didn't want to upset the economy by flooding it with cheap or free goods. One approach was to make the equipment available to other government entities, such as the City of Golden.

These masks will be very valuable in fighting fires where there is heavy smoke or fumes. Such masks would have saved much property had the department been equipped with them at the School of Mines chemical laboratory fire some years ago, or at the Robinson book store fire, the firemen finding it impossible to get at the seat of the blaze in both those cases.
