What's Blooming Along Golden's Trails?

Leucocrinum montanum currently blooming on Schweich Hill in north Golden

by Tom Schweich

Leucocrinum montanum Nutt. ex A. Gray “Star Lily,” is a very common low-growing lily-like white flower blooming now along the trails around Golden. Common along the Front Range from northernmost New Mexico, through Colorado and Wyoming, it has a similar south to north distribution in Nevada and California, with a kind of donut hole where it isn’t found in western parts of Colorado, Utah and eastern Nevada. As it happens, the eastern and western populations have somewhat different genetics, in that plants from the Rocky Mountains have 14 chromosomes, whereas those from Nevada and California have 13 chromosomes.

Leucocrinum montanum literally translates to “Mountain White Lily.” Wildflower books have a variety of common names: “Californian Soap-Root,” “Rocky Mountain Dwarf White Lily,” “Common Starlily,” “Mountain Lily,” and sometimes “Sand Lily.” This last is a misnomer. L. montanum is not a plant of sandy sites. Instead, it grows in rocks, gravel, and rocky soil. Additionally, there are other “lilies” that are found only in sand, and the common name “sand lily” should be reserved for them.

Our plant was first recognized by Thomas Nuttall, an English botanist and zoologist, while crossing the continent on the Oregon Trail in 1834. Nuttall wrote that he saw it “on the high plains of the Platte River.” This would have been the North Platte River in either Nebraska or Wyoming.

The meeting memo details $61,811 in eligible expenses, including new awnings and containers for custom floral displays. The maximum allowed grant is $15,000. This business currently has a location in Denver.

Proposed redesign of the Jackson Street corridor from the City's March 25th open house

The City recently held an open house regarding proposed changes to Jackson street. Most of the attendees were residents, and the Planning Department wants to reach more business owners. The plans call for the streets to be narrowed and most of the on-street parking to be removed. Business owners often want parking for their customers. Planning staff intends to visit a Chamber event this week to extend their reach to businesses.

Golden Jui Jitsu applied for a sign grant for $613.84. Staff approved it.

The CoorsTek/Clayworks project will tentatively begin demotion this week.

See the meeting packet for more information.

Golden History: The Lasting Arboreal Legacy of the DAR

Grove of trees behind the Visitors Center, most planted by the Lookout Mountain Chapter of the DAR

The April 15, 1986 Golden Transcript announced that the Mt. Lookout Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) would observe Arbor Day on Friday, April 25th. The DAR had been planting trees in the "Triangle Park" (northwest corner of Washington Avenue and Clear Creek) for many years. In 1986, they planned to add several shrubs, to control erosion and provide winter food for birds.

The Golden Visitors Center was built in 1997. It overlooks a fine stand of trees, which are the lasting legacy of those many DAR Arbor Day celebrations. Two monuments to the DAR triangle park remain in the grass behind the Visitors Center. See if you can find them!
