What Now?

Three Jefferson County Housing Authority properties (in green) and the area "southwest of Delong Park"

Tomorrow night, after the City Council meeting, they're planning to hold an "Executive Session" (no cameras, no audience) "to determine positions relative to matters that may be subject to negotiations, developing strategy for negotiations, and instructing negotiators regarding property on 24th Street southwest of Delong Park."

City staff has determined that this neighborhood is ideally suited for low-income housing, so that may be the plan for this proposed purchase.

Understanding the Budget #3 - Sales Tax

Meeting friends and collecting sales tax at Windy Saddle Cafe

By Loretta Huff

The previous article regarding City of Golden finances identified Taxes as the source of more than 75% of our General Fund revenues with 2025 tax income projected to be well over $33 million.

Sales Tax revenues are projected to be over $17 million, more than half of the Taxes category. The total Sales Tax in Golden is 7.5%, made up of three parts:

  • City of Golden, 3%
  • Jefferson County: 0.5%
  • State of Colorado: 4%

For items sold within the City limits, the 7.5% sales tax is collected by the vendor. The City’s 3% portion is remitted to the City.Section 3.03.30 of the City’s Tax Code contains a long list of transactions that should be taxed. A shorter list can be found on the Taxes and Fees page of the City website. The lists include many things you would expect, such as all food, gas and electric for residential and most commercial uses, hotels, cable TV. It also includes some surprising things, such as items dispensed from vending machines and “prosthetic devices for animals.” Both sites also contain lists of items that are exempt from sales tax.

2-3PM Virtual: Active Minds Monday

Jefferson County Public Library believes we can always be connecting and learning. Keep your mind active every Monday! Check out our website for other weekly Call In/Livestream events.

Today’s theme: The American West

Join Active Minds for an exploration of how the West was opened and won. We'll tell the story from a variety of perspectives--from the early explorers who ventured into the unknown to the fortune seekers who raced to the Gold Rush. We'll also include the often brutal elements of what was known at the time as "Manifest Destiny” including conflicts with Native Americans as well as Spanish Mexico, all of which added significant territory to the United States.

Save your spot for this Zoom program.

When:

2-3PM on Monday, Apr. 7th

Riding Dino at the Sinclair station, 12th and Ford – enlarge

The front page of the April 7, 1966 Colorado Transcript shows children playing on Dino, the mascot at the Sinclair gas station.

According to the Oil Company’s website, Sinclair started using dinosaurs in their advertising in the 1930s. The dinosaur association was immediately popular. The company had several life-sized fiberglass dinosaurs fabricated for display at the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair. After the fair closed, the dinosaurs went on a nationwide tour.

In the mid-1960s, smaller fiberglass dinosaurs began appearing at Sinclair stations across the country–like the one in the photograph above! It was probably new at the time, making it front page-worthy.

Golden’s Sinclair had a Dino until a few years ago. It appeared in Google Street Images through 2017, but was gone by December of 2018.
