Nazarene Draft Plan
GURA commissioned a study that declared the Nazarene Church property blighted. The next steps are an Impact Report and a Plan Area document. The Impact Report describes how making the property an Urban Renewal Authority would affect the other government entities that would normally expect to receive taxes from the property owner (that is--the County and the School District). The Plan Area document explains how the change in status will support the City's Comprehensive Plan. The Comp Plan is currently being rewritten to give greater emphasis to creating affordable housing--which is the intended use for this property.
Small Business Support
The Xcel power outage hurt many Golden businesses. Last week, the Downtown Development Authority voted to give grants of $2500, $3000, or $3500 to downtown businesses to defray the financial harms they incurred. The City and Chamber invited businesses to report the damages suffered. According to the meeting memo (p. 2), the other businesses in town haven't reported as much damage as the downtown businesses have. The memo suggests that GURA might help businesses in their districts to purchase generators--or might assist the business parks in purchasing large generators.
2026 Work Plan
State law now requires that new Urban Renewal Areas must now include all affected taxing entities; therefore, before creating the new URA for the Nazarene Church property, GURA will need to add representatives from Jefferson County and from the R1 School District.
The meeting will be recorded and available to watch at your convenience on the Agendas and Meetings page on the City of Golden website.

Golden History: The Financial District

Colorado Transcript - January 12, 1956 - the front page and the ad offering the homes that were on the site.

The January 12, 1956 Colorado Transcript announced that 1st National Bank would be moving from their historic home at 12th and Washington (currently Golden Goods). They were planning to build a new, modern structure with more space, more parking, and a drive-through window.

There were a number of homes on that block, and the bank offered the houses for sale to anyone interested in moving them.
At about the same time, Golden Savings and Loan built a new office on the other side of Jackson Street. Thereafter, they sometimes referred to the two institutions as "Golden's Financial District."

Both banks have changed hand several times since then. 1st National is now Wells-Fargo, and Golden Savings & Loan is BMO.
