M News

You may have noticed that the Lookout Mountain lighted "M" is not functioning properly and needs to be repaired. Mines will need the help of an electrical contractor to restore the "M" to its full glory. Repairs are scheduled for the week of July 1.

Thank you for your patience as we work to make the "M" shine on!

Antique Quilt Road Show @ The Quilt Museum

Sunday at the Museum
July 14 - 1pm-4pm

Curious about that antique family quilt in the closet?

A panel of RMQM's quilt experts will be providing a 5-minute evaluation of the antique quilts. Besides getting to view some quilts, the audience gets an insight as to how quilts can reveal their age through patterns and fabrics. Values are not determined by the panel.

Each attendee is welcome to bring one (1) quilt for review and show to the audience at no charge. If you wish to bring more than one quilt, there will be a $5.00 fee per quilt. We would like everyone in attendance the ability to have a quilt reviewed by the panel.

If you would like to know the value you can register for a verbal appraisal with local quilt appraiser Jeananne Wright. Fee $30 / Registration Required.

Register for Appraisals - click here.
A few appraisal slots remain. Please print out your confirmation and bring it with you on July 14th as you may not get a separate email.

Golden History: The Wall

The Brick Wall Along Ford Street - Photo by Linda Cobb - enlarge

The brick wall along Ford Street is, perhaps, the most recognizable part of the CoorsTek/Coors Porcelain/Coors Ceramics complex. It is one of the items that Coors plans to preserve. Recently, some bracing has been added to the outside of the wall.

Patrick Klein and his drone got an interesting view of the back side of that wall last week. It shows that the wall is currently standing alone, with no building behind it, and that the inside is braced as well.

Thanks, Pat!

Golden History: The Worst Possible Luck

Golden Lightning by Chris Davell – click to enlarge

The July 1, 1915 Colorado Transcript described the untimely death of “William Smith, a well-known Golden man.” Mr. Smith and his wife had been standing at a window of their home in south Golden, watching a lightning storm. They then sat on the couch and began reading the Sunday paper.

Suddenly, there was a particularly bright flash of lightening. The house shook and Mr. Smith sank back, dead. His clothes were on fire and his right arm was badly burned. Lightning had struck him in the back of the neck, leaving a small red spot.

The lighting had made a 1 inch hold in the wall of the room in which Smith died. The entire house was badly damaged by the lightning bolt: every window was shattered, and a large piece of the concrete foundation was broken loose.

Mrs. Smith had been sitting with her arm around her husband’s shoulders when he was struck, but she was unscathed.
