What's Blooming Along Golden's Trails? Wholeleaf Indian Paintbrush

“Wholeleaf Indian Paintbrush” (Castilleja integra A. Gray) is a common sight in every Golden open space from Dakota Ridge in the north to Tin Cup Ridge in the south. In Jefferson County, it is found in the foothills and on the plains of the northern part of the county, but no further south than Buffalo Creek. Its native range includes Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, and much of northern Mexico.

Castilleja integra was first scientifically observed in 1849 in the Organ Mountains of southern New Mexico near El Paso, Texas, by Charles Wright, a member of an army expedition. Later, Wright joined the Mexican Boundary Survey, the most comprehensive vegetative investigation ever conducted on the 1,969-mile border between Mexico and the United States. The U.S. government commissioned the survey to map and mark the new boundary that resulted from the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Wright’s collection of our plant was published in the 1859 Report on the United States and Mexican Boundary Survey.

Castilleja integra is termed a hemi-parasite because it can photosynthesize to produce at least some of its own energy, but it is partially dependent on a host plant for healthy growth. Typical host plants found around Golden are Fringed Sage (Artemisia frigida), Rubber Rabbitbrush (Ericameria nauseosa) and Spotted Gayfeather (Liatris punctata). Some grasses, e.g., Blue Grama (Bouteloua gracilis), are also thought to be host plants.

Hummingbirds are frequent pollinators of Castilleja integra including the rufous hummingbird, broad-tailed hummingbird, and black-chinned hummingbird, due to the good nectar flow, each flower producing about 2 milligrams of sugar in its nectar each day.

5:30-7PM Meeting to Determine Alternate Route through Town for the Peaks to Plains Trail

Clear Creek Trail, 2010 - Photo by Barb Warden

The Clear Creek Trail through Downtown Golden has become increasingly popular in recent years and is considered a recreational destination for the Denver Metro area. The regional Peaks to Plains (P2P) Trail connecting Idaho Springs to Denver will be a major part of this popularity once complete.

The City is engaging with the Golden community to determine the best route for a ‘secondary route’ of the P2P Trail through Downtown Golden. A secondary route would help alleviate trail congestion and create a better trail experience for all users.

This analysis will outline project-specific and community goals, and leverage existing or anticipated funding to determine the construction feasibility of a secondary route. Learn more on Guiding Golden.

Historic Preservation Plan - October, 2022

If you're interested in how much will stay and how much will go, check back to the Historic Preservation Board's discussion of the area: https://goldenco.granicus.com/MetaViewer.php?view_id=2&event_id=5185&meta_id=124808&ref=goldentoday.com

Page 11 of the document (or 13 of the whole PDF packet) shows the ages of the buildings & which ones they're going to keep.

This where they started (minus some roofing):

This is what they plan to demolish:

This is what they plan to keep:

Buildings to be demolished partially whited-out from the Google Satellite image

So, based on their historic preservation plan, there is a lot of demolition still to come!

Golden History: Paint Job for the Laundromat

Stewart Building at 10th and Washington – Colorado Transcript – June 3, 1970

The front page of the June 3, 1970 Golden Daily Transcript announced a new paint job for the Golden Laundromat. It was changing from a “weathered white” to a brick red color. The caption reassured readers that the Indian painting on the south side of the building was left intact.

A post-paint job photo shows that the laundromat also got some striking signage! Note that the Visitors Center hasn’t yet been built across the street.

The Stewart building was originally a grocery store. It served as the Golden community center during the 1950s before becoming a laundromat in 1959. The building currently contains several businesses, including a consignment store on the first floor and a pilates studio on the second floor.

This present day photo shows that the Indian mural on the south side is still there. It was originally an advertising mural for tobacco.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!

Colorado’s 10 best dinosaur destinations, from museums to track sites and quarries

By Tiney Ricciardi
Denver Post

Colorado could come across as dinosaur-obsessed — and with good reason.

The Rocky Mountain West has unparalleled access to artifacts from the dinosaur age because the uplift that formed the mountains unearthed layers of rock that were buried for millennia prior, said Bruce Schumacher, senior paleontologist with the U.S. Forest Service... Read more...
