2-3PM Virtual/Call In: Active Minds Mondays - The U.S. Internment of Japanese-Americans

At Jefferson County Public Library, we foster continuous learning and connections. Keep your minds engaged every Monday! Be sure to explore our website for additional weekly event options, including call-ins and livestreams.

Today’s theme: The U.S. Internment of Japanese-Americans

Months after the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 authorizing the internment of over 100,000 Japanese-Americans. Seek to understand this dark chapter in American history and what we learned as a nation from this experience with Active Minds.

5:30PM Downtown Development Authority Meeting @ City Hall

DDA recently paid to have the areas under the Ford and Washington Avenue bridges power washed. They also funded repainting the Welcome Arch.

Tonight, the board will discuss funding several possible projects. Options include making Washington Avenue and Hwy 58 a "Gateway" to downtown. This could include:

Possible screen walls on these two corners
  • Building a wall to screen the private residence on the northwest corner of that intersection (up to $25K).
  • Building a wall to screen the gas station at the northeast corner of the intersection (up to $75K).
  • Move the mini arch from 13th and Ford to the westbound exit ramp from Hwy 58 (up to $75K).
  • Cleaning up the City owned property on the southwest corner and building a welcome feature there (from $30K-300K).
Potential future cultural plaza

They might also help fund converting the parking lot at 12th & Miners Alley into a "cultural plaza." Conceptual design work would cost $10-15K.

The City plans to redesign Jackson Street. The DDA is interested in building a sidewalk on the south side of 11th, between Washington & Jackson. This might require changes to the new ADA ramp at 11th and Washington. The City wants to solicit bids for both 11th St. (where DDA hopes to build a sidewalk) and Jackson Street (where the City plans to remove 51 parking spots). They anticipate that design work would cost between $175K and $230K, and construction of the new sidewalk would cost $500-600K.

The 2025 budget has been increased to pay for miscellaneous design work and rodent mitigation (particularly along Miners Alley).

Staff proposes increasing DDA's contribution to city projects from $700K to $900K.

Golden History: Policing the Beavers

I used an old map and a Google satellite view to trace the course of the mill race.

Parfet Park was bisected by a mill ditch until the mid-1950s. The water running through the ditch powered the grinding operations at the Golden Mill.

In the October 21, 1926 Colorado Transcript, Mayor Bert Jones expressed concern about beaver depredations in Parfet Park.

The beautiful trees growing along the Golden mill ditch where it runs through the Parfet Memorial park are being badly damaged by beavers. The marshals, city clerk and police judge have borrowed all the bear and coyote traps they can find and are doing their best to get Messrs Beaver. I hope by the time these lines are on their way to the linotype the editor can add a line stating the police gang has won out.

This excerpt from an aerial photo taken in 1950 shows the mill run and the trees in Parfet Park – Denver Public Library Western History Collection – enlarge

By the time the paper went to press, the editor was able to add the following note:

The mayor has his wish. Marshal Tom Rowe made the first catch last week, a big papa beaver, and now the men are after the rest of the family.
