9:30AM Walk with a Geologist at Triceratops Trail

Triceratops Trail - Photo by Bud Rockhill

Walk with a Geologist at Triceratops Trail is a 2-hour walking tour of Triceratops Trail in nearby Golden, Colorado. The 1.5-mile, gravel hiking trail located one block east of 6th Avenue and 19th Street in Golden, winds between vertical walls of sandstone and into reclaimed clay pits. A professional or knowledgeable amateur geologist  will lead the tour and highlight the many viewable dinosaur tracks, fossils, and impressions. Participants are responsible for their own transportation. This tour is designed for participants ages 16 and older.

Triceratops Trail has many viewable dinosaur tracks, but none more impressive than the large three-toed Tyrannosaur track and many four-toed Triceratops tracks. The tracks and traces are very different from what can be seen at Dinosaur Ridge, and the fossils are dated to the end of the Age of Dinosaurs, 68 million years ago.

Near the end of the trail at the edge of Hole #13 of the Fossil Trace Golf Course, the vertical sandstone wall is covered with large palm frond impressions, evidence of the Late Cretaceous climate of Colorado. This wet area was covered with palms, magnolia, and sycamore trees, and even low-lying ferns and herbs.

Participants provide their own transportation to Triceratops Trail in Golden, CO.

  • $20 per person
  • Tour is suggested for ages 16 and older
  • 2 hours
  • Admission to the Exhibit Hall at Dinosaur Ridge Main Visitor Center is included with each ticket
  • Tour may be called off for active precipitation, temps below 32 degrees, or lack of registrations
  • Appropriate attire: comfortable shoes, sun hats, sunglasses, removable clothing (windbreakers, fleeces, etc.)
  • Bring water
  • Minimum of 2 and maximum of 19 participants

Miners Alley 2025 Season

Miners Alley has announced their 2025 season! This is what we'll be watching next year (and I can't wait!):

Morning After Grace (January 24th - March 2nd, 2025)
· Written by Carey Crim, this heartfelt and witty play explores the unexpected connections and second chances in life as three seniors navigate love, loss, and new beginnings. A hit show from The Purple Rose Theatre – the same theater that brought A Jukebox for The Algonquin to MAPAC, is perfect for those who appreciate humor and warmth in the face of life's surprises.

Love Letters (February 14th and 15th, 2025)
· Celebrate Valentine’s Day Weekend with this intimate and touching play by A.R. Gurney. Love Letters traces the lifelong relationship between two friends through their written correspondence, revealing the power of words and the deep connection that endures across time. Directed by Warren Sherrill and starring MAPAC’s own Lisa DeCaro and Len Matheo, this production is a poignant exploration of love, missed opportunities, and enduring bonds.

National Bohemians (March 28th - April 8th, 2025)
· Written by local playwright Luke Sorge, this dark comedy follows two estranged brothers who return to their tiny hometown to confront their oldest brother, John, who has taken their mother out of her care facility. As legal ramifications, financial implications, and family history are uncovered, so is John’s true motive. Directed by Warren Sherrill, National Bohemians is funny, moving, and somewhat supernatural.

Ring of Fire (May 9th – June 29th, 2025)
· A high-energy musical that brings the legendary songs of the legendary Johnny Cash to life. Ring of Fire weaves Cash's iconic hits into a story of love, resilience, and the American spirit. This production is a must-see for fans of timeless country music and the Man in Black's enduring legacy.

Assassins (August 8th – September 14th, 2025)
· With music by Stephen Sondheim, Assassins is a bold and provocative musical that explores the minds and motives of history's most infamous figures who attempted to assassinate U.S. presidents. Blending dark humor with compelling narratives, this production examines the darker side of the American Dream. Directed by Warren Sherrill with Music Direction by David Nehls, Assassins promises to be a thought-provoking experience.

Diva Royale (October 3rd – November 9th, 2025)
· Written by Award-Winning Actor, Jeff Daniels and directed by Miners Alley’s Len Matheo, Diva Royal tells the story of three stay-at-home moms from the Midwest who share a deep obsession with Celine Dion. Their spontaneous trip to New York City unfolds into an evening filled with side-splitting hilarity. This crowd-pleasing comedy is guaranteed to make you laugh until you cry.

Holiday Show (TBD) (November 28th – December 28th, 2025)
· The season will conclude with a special holiday show, details of which will be announced at a later date. This production promises to bring festive cheer to the MAPAC stage and will be a delightful way to close out the 2025 season.

Golden History: The Stone Stable on Jackson St.

Livery Stable on Jackson Street, built in 1870 – Golden History Museum Collection

The August 17, 1870 Colorado Transcript announced that “Mr. Doolittle’s splendid stone stable is receiving the roof, and will be ready for occupancy in a few days…. When fairly settled in his new quarters he will have as fine a livery stable outfit a the most fastidious could require. We commend his enterprise.”

Excerpt from the 1919 Sanborn Insurance Map of Golden. The livery stable would have been across Jackson Street from the (current) downtown parking garage.

Doolittle built up a fine fleet of vehicles, including the only Hearse in Golden. He operated the stable for ten years and sold it in 1880. The business went through several owners, including Lake & Covey (1880-1884), Jud Fowler (1884-1886), Fenn (1886-1888), John Williams (1888), and Elwood & Hiskey (1888).

C. W. Lake bought the business in 1889, and for the next 22 years it was owned at various times by either C. W. Lake or Joseph Dennis or the partnership of Lake & Dennis.

In 1901, Lake moved on and Dennis took a new partner–“Shorty” Cunningham. Dennis & Cunningham ran the business until 1911. Cunningham then ran it alone until 1915.

By 1917, automobiles were becoming widespread enough that livery (rental of horses and carriages/wagons) was a dying industry. The March 8, 1917 Colorado Transcript announced that the horses, carriages, harness, etc. had been sold at auction. The article remarks that the sale “probably marks the end of the livery business in Golden.” For the next several decades, the building was used as a gas/service station.

In 1959, the old stone building was torn down. The stone was hauled away by the Colorado Central Power company and used for rip-rap at one of their buildings along the South Platte.
