Barrels & Bottles is celebrating their 11th anniversary by closing their original location. This isn't a bad thing, as they own their own building on South Golden Road, which contains both the production facility and the tap room.

5-8PM First Super Cruise of the Season

2024 is the start of the Golden Super Cruise’s 20th official anniversary season. There will no longer be entertainment, official vendors, an information line or email contact. The Cruise has always been yours and you know the drill. If you’ve been a participant or spectator, come out as usual.
If you’re new to the Cruise, start at South Golden Road and jump in. It’s easy and the people are great. Support the City of Golden and Golden businesses because they’ve always been our gracious hosts. Thank you very sincerely for the perfect job of picking up and packing out trash. Point of important courtesy: Drive straight through all roundabouts, but ESPECIALLY at South Golden Road and Ulysses at the top of the hill. Tell others and use it as a cooldown and space it out to come back around through the Quaker roundabout.

11AM and 1PM The Emperor's New Clothes @ Miners Alley Opens Today

The Emperor loves his clothes! In fact, he cares more about his clothes than his people, and that’s not right! Along come a pair of swindlers ready to take advantage of the gullible Emperor and his two town officials, and the story begins.
Come help the Emperor learn appearances are not everything and honesty is the best policy.

3:30PM Ode to Life! Choir Concert & Silent Auction

The Golden Concert Choir will present its spring concert, Ode to Life in the Great Hall of the historic and beautiful Calvary Episcopal Church of Golden (please use the 14th Street entrance). The program features the giants of classical music: Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Berlioz, and a less well-known woman composer of the early 20th century, Lili Boulanger. The program begins with Berlioz’s very dramatic rejection of the horrors of death and progresses through a series of pieces which resolve into a recognition of the joy of life represented by the choral music of Beethoven’s Ode to Joy.
The doors will open at 3:00 p.m. to allow time for a fundraising silent auction and sale which will precede and follow the concert. The concert starts at 4.
Tickets will be available at the door: $15 for adults, $10 for seniors, $5 for students, no charge for children under 6. Come enjoy the music with us, and shop for Mother's Day gifts and local summer activities to benefit the choir.

Golden History: Death of William Sarell

Portrait of William Sarell from the Golden History Museum collection
80 Years Ago
The May 4, 1944 Colorado Transcript published the sad news that William Sarell had died at age 93.
Mr. Sarell came to Golden with his parents when he was 16 years old. He ran a hardware store in Golden for more than 60 years–first in partnership with his father, and later with his son Raymond.

He worked until he was 91, and for many years enjoyed his status as the elder statesman of Washington Avenue. In his later years, he often gave interviews to the Transcript, highlighting the facts that he was here when Calvary Church was built and he worked as a page for the Territorial Legislature.

Sarell Hardware operated in several locations through its years in business–first in a small shop on 12th Street, moving to the Harrison Block (where Creekside Jewelers are now) in 1878. The following year, they moved to the Opera House (now the Ace Hi Tavern). Sometime before 1901, they constructed a building at 13th and Ford. In 1908 they bought 1118 Washington (now the Red Wagon). Sometime before 1937, they bought their final home at 1112 Washington Avenue.

Their first advertisement appeared in 1866. At that time, they specialized in producing custom metalwork. They next added stoves, tinware, and nails. Over the years, the types of inventory grew–from churns to tools to step ladders, cutlery, roofing supplies, plumbing supplies, garden supplies, and garden seeds.
William died in 1944 at the age of 93. Unfortunately, his son (and business partner of 45 years) died 2 weeks later, bringing the 60 year old family business to an abrupt halt. All three generations of Sarell Hardware owners are buried in the Golden cemetery.
Sarell Hardware went through a few owners in the year after the Sarells died, but in the summer of 1945, Joe and Ruby Meyer came to town and bought the store--which remained in the Meyer family until 2021.
