Shakespeare in the Parking Lot is exactly what it sounds like—an abridged performance of Romeo and Juliet. The performance takes place in and around our pick-up truck “set” that we drive to the parking lot. Today's performance is at the Buffalo Bill Museum on Lookout Mountain.

Cyclists will be riding up Lookout Mountain Road as part of the Denver Century Ride on the morning of September 28. Visitors are encouraged to access the museum from I-70.  See directions on our Location Page.

Golden History: The Dump

Stock photo – not Rooney Road

The September 29th, 1970 Golden Transcript included an article entitled “Rooney Dump Hours Change with Season.”

The article alerted residents that the dump would be open 7AM-5PM beginning October 1st. “Tickets for one dump visit or booklets for twenty (at no discount) may be purchased at either the sanitary fill entrances or the courthouse in Golden…. Another burn at the Rooney Rd. facility will be held sometime in the near future for dead tree limbs.”

This is interesting for a couple of reasons. First, it’s a reminder of the time before the Clean Air act, when we still disposed of branches and leaves by burning them. Second, curbside trash collection was just coming into common use at that time, and many people still made regular trips to the dump to unload their household waste.

So what happened to that Rooney Road dump? It was eventually filled and “capped” (covered with clay and soil), and it’s now home to the Rooney Road Sports Complex.

Many thanks to the Golden Rotary Club for sponsoring Golden History Moments for the month of September.

Golden Fire Safety Day

Golden Fire Department

Fire Prevention Week (FPW) 2024 is October 6th through October 12th, with the theme being “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!”. The National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) cited, “This year’s focus on working smoke alarms comes in response to NFPA data, which shows that the majority of U.S. home fire deaths continue to occur in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.” The NFPA most recent data states that having working smoke alarms in the home reduces the risk of dying in a house fire by more than half (54%). The key messages for this year’s FPW theme are:

  • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area (like a hallway), and on each level (including the basement) of the home.
  • Make sure smoke alarms meet the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
  • Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button.
  • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or don’t respond when tested.

To kick off Fire Prevention Week, the Golden Fire Department is excited to open our doors on October 5th, 2024, from 8:00am until 12:00pm for our 18th annual Safety Day event. This 100% free public event is located at our Headquarters (Station 21 - 911 10th Street Golden, CO 80401) and is open to everyone and any age range. Age specific education is provided by our safety and preparedness partners in the Denver metro area in our truck bays laid out in a farmers market style booth setup. We cover wide ranging topics with some examples being fire, police, paramedics, dispatch, animal control, burn teams, and live demonstrations throughout the morning.

There will be light refreshments, snacks, and prizes to win in a raffle, again at no cost to our visitors. There will be hands on activities that is fun for all ages, and tours of varying emergency vehicles with staff who can answer questions in their areas of expertise. We will have free face painting as well, so bring your friends and families from all over to enjoy a morning that you get to meet your local responders and learn about being more prepared for a wide range of topics!
