Golden History: Only the Car Was Hurt

Denver & Inter-Mountain Street crossing 19th Street - Golden History Museum Collection

Prior to 1953, Jackson Street ended at 13th; from there south, it was a railroad right-of-way. The August 9, 1934 Colorado Transcript described a collision where 19th Street crossed the tracks.

Excerpt from the 1936 Sanborn insurance map - Library of Congress

The article tells us that a car, driven by a woman from Denver, stalled out as it crossed the tracks. Seeing the streetcar approaching, the driver and two passengers jumped out of the car. The streetcar hit it and pushed it for another 100 feet before stopping. The car was demolished but the occupants were uninjured.

This 1936 newspaper photo from the Golden History Museum collection shows another collision between the interurban and an automobile.

Such collisions were not uncommon in an era when cars were less reliable and drivers less experienced.
