Golden History: A Snippet of 1928

A rare sighting of the northern lights over North Table Mountain in November, 2025 - Photo by Chris Davell

The ‘'northern lights,” or aurora borealis were visible to Golden people last Saturday night and attracted considerable attention. Shortly after twilight a great light appeared radiating from the dark horizon up to the stars.... The beams in the northern heavens lasted for several hours. A number of people thought the lights were the reflection of a big fire.
Colorado Transcript - July 12, 1928
The City was operating on water restrictions. Residents were allowed to irrigate once a day--west of Washington Avenue in the morning and east of Washington in the evening. The Water Commissioner assured residents that there was enough water, but when everyone sprinkled at the same time, subscribers living higher on the hills weren't getting any water.

The City had just posted its first stop signs. They were positioned on 12th, 13th, and 14th Streets to stop cars before they crossed Washington Avenue. They also had one at 13th and Ford. The signs were painted yellow on galvanized iron, with black letters. The words "Thru Stop Street" are sufficiently large so that they are plainly seen at quite a distance.
The City was paying someone to maintain the parks. This was a bit controversial, with some residents thinking this was a waste of City money.

The new City campground, with its tent sites and stone cabins, was quite popular. Some residents thought the City should construct more cabins to meet demand. There was no budget to build more stone cabins, so some people suggested building cheap frame cabins. The Mayor opposed this, thinking we should maintain quality standards.
