8:30AM - 1PM North Table Mountain Botany Hike

Traverse the west and southwest slopes of North Table Mountain on the City of Golden North Table Mountain Trail, then climb through the rim onto the top of the mesa, and return by way of the Jefferson County Open Space North Table Mountain Loop, crossing diverse plant communities where plains and foothills species mingle, including lichen-covered lava cliffs, slickrock and talus, grasslands, and shrublands, looking at and identifying plants as we go.  We won’t do any hard-core keying, but some familiarity with local plants will be helpful.  There will be a plant list with both scientific and common names.

Bring lots of water, a rain jacket, snacks, and sunscreen if you need it.

Remember that it is Spring, which in Colorado can mean sun, thunder, rain, and snow, and sometimes all four!

DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Up to difficulty 3½. The route is 2 to 2½ miles and will include a short steep climb with loose rock and a rock scramble requiring 2 to 3 footsteps up.

Hosted by Tom Schweich

Golden History: End of the Line

June 8, 1950 Colorado Transcript

The June 8, 1950 Colorado Transcript announced two monumental changes in Golden’s transportation history–the end of the 84 trolley and the beginning of the 84 bus line. The 84 trolley began as the Denver, Lakewood, & Golden Railroad in 1892. It ran through the Lakewood area and provided convenient hourly transportation between Denver and Golden for many years.

In 1950, the Denver Tramway Company decided to replace all metro-area streetcars and interurbans with diesel buses. Buses provided more flexibility than fixed-route rail lines, and the individual vehicles were more easily interchangeable. The “84” bus line, which ran chiefly along Colfax, eventually became today's routes 16 and 17.

Fifty-four years later, in 2004, Denver area voters approved the FasTracks program, which was intended to bring back commuter rail service. The line from Denver to Golden (the “W Line”) was the first one built, largely because much of the old 1950 right of way through Lakewood was still open.
