6PM Parks & Recreation Board Meeting

Lions Park - photo by Barb Warden

The Parks Board will discuss how to use their summer study sessions. They may do field trips to some of the parks and facilities that the board oversees. They will choose a new representative to serve on the Special Events Committee, which meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 8:30AM.Staff will update the board on pesticide free parks, and the board will discuss the topic.

They will discuss park hours, which are currently posted as 5AM-11PM. Some community members have asked that the hours be shortened to "dawn to dusk." This would match Jeffco Open Space hours. Lighted facilities such as tennis courts and pickleball cours can still be open after dark, and trails that go through parks can still be travelled.

A subcommittee recently helped staff in interviewing consultants for a new Parks & Recreation Master Plan and a new Open Space Master Plan. The subcommittee will report back to the rest of the board.

The Director will report on various Parks & Rec projects.

American Flag Project

Flags in Parfet Park - Veteran's Day

Submitted by Elizabeth Hilliard

Ever wondered where all those flags come from that are displayed around Golden on certain holidays? The Kiwanis Club of Golden and Scout Troop 130 has been providing American flags to residents and businesses in the City of Golden for 23 years! They are currently taking orders for subscriptions to the 2024 American Flag Project. You can order as many flags as you want for $30 per flag per year. They’ll provide and install a pole receptacle in front of your property. Five times a year the Scouts will come plant a beautiful big flag in front of your property complete with a salute, on the following dates:

MEMORIAL DAY – May 27th, 2024
FLAG DAY – June 14, 2024
INDEPENDENCE DAY – July 4, 2024
LABOR DAY – September 2, 2024
VETERAN’S DAY – November 11, 2024.

Please make your payment no later than May 3, 2024 in order to get on the schedule for the first holiday. Checks can be made out to and mailed to:

For more information, please contact Cynthia Bauman at 720-498-3592 or cynnthiabauman6@gmail.com.

For those interested in participating in this project, both the Scout Troop 130 is looking for more youth involvement, and the Kiwanis Club is seeking members and volunteers. See Kiwanisofgolden.org for more information on the latter.

Golden History: Massive Windstorm

State Industrial School, circa 1928 - Denver Public Library Collection

The April 18, 1912 Colorado Transcript described a terrible storm:

TERRIFIC WIND CREATES HAVOC IN ALL PARTS OF COUNTY - Mine Buildings Destroyed by Fire Which Follows Fierce Gale--Fire Also Threatens East Golden and Industrial School

The State Industrial School lost windows, two houses, and several roofs. A fire was discovered in the roof of the boiler house, but an employee and the boys extinguished it before it spread.

Many homes and businesses in Golden lost roofs, windows, chimneys, sheds, fences, and trees. One man lost a barn and had a horse badly cut. A bridge over Clear Creek at the Golden Smelter was blown away.

The electric commuter lines and the steam trains were all delayed because of the wind.

Guggenheim Hall on the School of Mines Campus

The School of Mines lost two big cottonwood trees, bricks, big windows, part of the roof on Guggenheim Hall (which was only six years old at the time), and sections of the fence around the athletic field.

Two houses in Pleasant View--fortunately unoccupied--were blown down and scattered.

So many telephone and telegraph pole and wires were blown down that the article provided details about the torturous rerouting required to make a call.

A message to Colorado Springs was carried in a three-quarters circle over nearly 300 miles of telephone wire via Salida, Leadville and Pueblo to Colorado Springs. Denver-Cripple Creek connections were made through Clear Creek to Georgetown over Argentine pass to Breckenridge, from there to Leadville and then to Cripple Creek, cover a distance of 250 miles for an ordinarily 90-mile stretch of wire.

In other disastrous news, that same issue announced that the Titanic had sunk after hitting an iceberg, and 1500 people had drowned
