What’s Blooming Along the Peaks to Plains Trail? Mountain Tail-Leaf!

Figure 1. “Mountain Tail-Leaf” — Pericome caudatus A. Gray, along the Peaks to Plains Trail. Inset: Flowers of Mountain Tail-Leaf.
By Tom Schweich
On the Peaks to Plains trail about 2/3 of the way from the Grant Terry Bridge to the Tough Cuss Bridge, look in the talus piles below the Canal Zone climbing area for a 4-5 foot shrub with clusters of small yellow flowers. This is “Mountain Tail-Leaf” — Pericome caudatus A. Gray. Though it is in the sunflower family (Asteraceae) it has only disk flowers, and not the large ray flowers that characterize the typical sunflower. The leaves are triangular and have a long tail, giving it both its common name “Tail-Leaf” and scientific name caudatus, which means “having a tail.”
First collected by Charles Wright in 1851 who wrote that he found it “… among rocks, on the sides of mountains, at the copper mines, New Mexico …” Mr. Wright was working with the scientific corps of the U. S. Boundary Commission. Their itinerary from July to November 1851, was from El Paso to the copper mines of Santa Rita del Cobre in the southwestern part of New Mexico, and then into the northern part of Mexico. It seems certain that Wright’s collection of Mountain Tail-Leaf was made near Santa Rita del Cobre, about 12 miles east of Silver City, NM. The town no longer exists, having been completely swallowed up by the Freeport-McMoRan Chino open-pit copper mining complex.
We now know our plant’s primary range is in the lower elevation mountains of Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona, with a few scattered collections in northern Mexico, and eastern California. Near Golden, it is known only from Clear Creek Canyon, but also occurs around Pine and Buffalo Creek in central Jefferson County.
Fire at Coors Yesterday

Coors employees waiting for the all-clear to return to the building - Photo by Chris Davell
Golden firefighters were called to the Coors Brewery yesterday. Chris Davell followed the firetruck to the brewery and was told by a police officer that the employees had been evacuated while firefighters extinguished a fire inside the brewery. That's all the information I have.
Thanks, Chris Davell, for capturing the moment!

6PM Parks, Recreation & Museums Advisory Board Meeting @ City Hall

Lions Park in the Morning - Frank Hanou
- Meeting Agenda
- Watch the meeting streaming live starting at 6PM
- Attend the meeting @ City Hall Council Chambers - 911 10th Street - (map)
- Provide in-person comment during the meeting at 6PM.
The Board will review the public art pieces chosen for DeLong and New Loveland Mine Parks and the Clear Creek Trail.
Last month, a Golden parent expressed concern that the City's summer camp could not accommodate her 4-year old, who has a disability. She feels that the City's programs should accommodate all of Golden's children. She also stated that a staff member had told her that less than half of the 116 spots in the City's summer camps went to Golden residents. City Staff has researched this situation and will report back to the board.
They will hear an update on the ongoing Master Plan development process.
They will discuss replacing the playground equipment in Heritage Dells park.
They will hear an update on the Southside Neighborhood project.
They will discuss the Pesticide-Free/Organic Park update: "Goats in the Park."
Staff will update them "Division Staffing and Structure." The City is currently advertising for a new Parks & Recreation Director ($152,253-186,510), a Deputy Director of Recreation and Golf ($114,390-140,128), and several other jobs in this department.

Golden History: Seeing the Foothills

“Rubberneck automobiles” parked near the interurban depot – click to enlarge

No more will the festive rubberneck automobile be heard chugging and groaning through the streets of Golden, as a deal has been made with the Tramway company whereby the sightseeing trade will be diverted to the “Seeing the Foothills” electric cars.
Colorado Transcript – August 15, 1912

“Rubberneck automobiles” were large touring cars used to bring passengers to the sights. “Seeing Denver” was a tour-guiding company based in the Brown Palace in Denver. They used chartered streetcars to provide guided tours to visitors. “Seeing the Foothills” was another service they offered, using chartered interurban cars to bring tourists to foothills towns, including Golden, Leyden, and at times Morrison.

One of their offerings was called the “Wishbone” Route. That would go from Denver to the coal-mining town of Leyden (map), giving passengers a view of the Ralston Creek valley. The car would then backtrack to Arvada and follow the Clear Creek valley into Golden.

Both routes traversed many miles of farmland, culminating in beautiful views of the foothills from both Leyden and Golden. The 3-hour round trip cost $1.
