To celebrate the 4th, the Railroad Museum is opening four special train cars that are usually not accessible to the public. Don't miss this unique opportunity to explore these cars — and enjoy a leisurely train ride while you're there!

HOW & WHERE TO PARK IN GOLDEN ON THE 4TH
For the 52nd year, the Golden Lions Club will host a 4th of July Festival in Lions Park, at 10th & Maple. Get there early and buy some raffle tickets, because they hold drawings all day long, throughout the day. The grand prize (announced at the end of the day) is $1,000!

You can bring a picnic, or buy food from the on-site vendors (Woody's Pizza, Brown Gringo Tacos, Hip Pop, Gator Tails, or hot dogs from the American Legion). Beverages available include Coors, Golden City Brewery, Bonacquisti Wines, and hard seltzers.

There will be live music all day, including:
- 11:30AM-2:30PM - Jewel & the Rough (rock & roll)
- 3:30-6:30PM - Ryan Chrys and the Roughcuts (outlaw country)
- 6:45-7:15PM - Golden Eagle Concert Band (patriotic band music)

There will be lots of fun for the kids, including face painters and a bunch of inflatable amusements--all free!
There will be NO FIREWORKS, so the event is over after the band concert.
Since I'm using these vintage photos for illustrations, here's one last one. Lions Park still had a pond in 2008!

Live Music for Thursday, Jul. 4th

- 5-8PM Casey Russell @ Golden Mill @ Golden Mill

- 5:30-8:30PM Chris Child @ Buffalo Rose @ Buffalo Rose

Golden History: What Did We Do Before the Lions Stepped In?

Since this year marks the 52nd year that the Golden Lions Club has been hosting our 4th of July festivities, I wondered how the town celebrated before 1972 (when the Lions took over), so I checked the early July Transcript for the previous year.
In 1971, Heritage Square hosted 4th of July festivities, including "stirring" band concerts and a "thrilling" fireworks display.

At that time, the park was presenting itself as an artisans village, "where gifted craftsmen create exciting goods right on the premises." Their 4th of July advertisement invited the public to
Tour our charming 19th century village
Browse our quaint shops
Enjoy old fashioned snacks, ice cream and candies
Relax in our beer garden
Dine and have cocktails aboard our antique narrow gauge train
Applaud nostalgia theater with turn of the century flavor

The next issue of the Transcript reported that 30,000 people had filled Heritage Square to watch the fireworks, and many more watched from the nearby roads and hills.

Heritage Square continued to celebrate the 4th with fireworks, even after the Lions Club started hosting festivals downtown. For several years, Golden had two fireworks displays!

The park expanded its array of attractions over the years, eventually including an amusement park, narrow-gauge railroad, music hall, go-karts, paddle boats, and an awesome alpine slide!

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
