7-9PM Dancing with Deadpool: The 27-year-long Colorado River Crisis @ Common Flame

The Colorado River flows 1400 miles from the Rockies to the Gulf of California in Mexico, providing water for 40m Americans in seven states and 30 Indian Tribes. This water is used by cities (including Denver), industry, power providers, nature, and agriculture. Since 2000 flows in the river are down by 20% compared to the 20th century, and during the last seven years the flows are down by 35%. The two largest reservoirs in the United States were full in 2000 and will be about 25% full at the end of this year. Without substantial cuts in water deliveries, our reservoirs are facing ‘deadpool’ where water can no longer be reliably released at will. Climate change has been attributed to between 50% and 100% of these flow declines and the best research suggests additional flow declines are forthcoming. What does all this mean for residents of Colorado’s Front Range? What can be done about this? What can individuals do to minimize the harm that all this entails? More information

Golden History: A Fire in the Armory

Postcard of the Armory Building at 13th and Arapahoe
91 Years Ago
In 1935, the Armory belonged to the School of Mines. The first floor was leased out to the Golden Post Office and the US Geological Survey. The second floor contained WPA offices, classrooms, and sleeping rooms for ROTC students. The third floor contained a rifle range for use in military training.

The October 22, 1935 Oredigger reported that Lannie Brendle, who slept in a room below the firing range, awakened on Saturday morning, the 17th of October, to find that the ceiling of his room was “red hot.” He ran to get the caretaker, who called the fire department.
The fire had started when someone left a still-burning cigarette on a firing mat (a padded mat that shooters knelt or lay on as they shot). The fire burned slowly, first through the mat, then into the floor. It was moving into the 2nd floor ceiling when Brendle discovered it the next morning.
The fire department had to burrow through the floor and ceiling to get to the fire but were able to stop it. Damage amounted to about $1,000.
