It's a Sign!

Entrance sign at the Golden Cemetery – enlarge

The September 12, 1929 Colorado Transcript announced that the Golden Cemetery was getting a new metal sign, “…with the words ‘Golden Cemetery,’ which will be mounted over the two gate posts at the cemetery. This was secured through the efforts of William Woods, Golden mortician.

I wondered whether that same sign had lasted all these years, so I searched old Transcripts for any word of the sign being replaced since then. No indication there. Then I moved on to the Golden History Museum’s photo collection. They had one showing what appears to be the current sign in 1989.

Finally, I checked the Denver Public Library’s Western History collection, and eureka! I found a photo of the Golden Cemetery sign taken in 1935, when the W.P.A. was cleaning up the cemetery and building a new office.

That sign is distinctly different, and is probably the one that was fabricated in 1929.

9-10:30AM Community Marketing Stakeholder Committee @ City Hall

Golden Welcome Center - Photo by Richard Luckin

The City's public relations and paid media consultants will report on their efforts and results for the first part of the year. Their reports will be added to the meeting packet later.

They will discuss the grant application that they submitted to the Colorado Tourism Office. They have requested funds to develop a Passport to Fun program. This would be used to encourage tourists to visit during the off-seasons. They would visit the Golden Welcome Center to get a passport then receive stamps as they visit Golden businesses and attractions. The visitors can then bring the completed passports back to the Welcome Center, where they will be entered in a drawing for a weekend getaway in Golden.

They will discuss the budget, with the goal of reducing spending for marketing and paid media. The group wants to build a financial reserve for future endeavors and plans to budget funds to support the Welcome Center.

The Economic Development Commission will consider a $300 sponsorship request for the Golden Women in Business. This group will hold an event at Goosetown Station on September 18th, which will provide women business owners with an opportunity to network. The sponsorship will cover the cost of a photobooth.

They will receive an update on the Economic Contribution Study that they commissioned. A preliminary draft of the study is included in the meeting packet, beginning on p. 8.

Staff will report on the recent Mines Career Fair and the July sales and lodging tax reports. They will also describe work they're doing with the Planning Department to development Transportation Demand Strategies (that is--strategies to discourage single occupancy vehicles from coming to downtown Golden).
