10-11:30AM Community Marketing Board Meeting @ City Hall Council Chambers

Visit Golden has a new strategic plan, with a new mantra: "Tourism in Golden exists to serve the people who live here." A recent resident poll rated satisfaction with tourism at 2.6 out of 5. The Marking Board wants to improve residents' views on tourism.

To learn more about resident sentiment, they "...sat down with the people who run Golden's hotels, and with Visit Golden and City of Golden staff. [They] also had conversations with Coors, the Mayor, the Welcome Center, the School of Mines, Clayworks, the Chamber, and Fossil Trace, and conducted interviews in Spanish along Clear Creek."

In response to those findings, Visit Golden will work to more evenly distribute visitation throughout the year and encourage visitors to treat the town more carefully (less littering, less erosion of Clear Creek). They also hope to persuade residents of the value of tourism and provide extra perks to locals.

The Strategic Plan is included on pp 2-12 of the meeting packet. This is followed by the Business Plan (pp 13-24) and the Budget (pp 25, 26).

Public Comment

The meeting begins with public comment. If you want to address Council, you will have three minutes to speak. Any public comments received by email before 3PM will be posted in the meeting packet after 3 (so check back then).

Items on the Consent Agenda are considered non-controversial, not needing discussion. All items in this section will be approved with a single vote.

Any councilor wishing to discuss a consent issue can request that it be removed from the consent agenda and discussed and voted on separately.

These are the items on tonight's Consent Agenda:

  • Severance agreement with the previous City Manager. Mr. Vargo's last day in the office was August 11, 2026. His last day on the payroll will be September 14, 2026. He will receive a lump sum severance of $143,069.47, which is half his current salary of $286,138.94 per annum. He will also receive a lump sum of $11,976.24 to pay for six months of COBRA (health insurance) coverage. More info.
  • Agreement to pay the Deputy City Manager an additional $1,927.49 per biweekly paycheck while she is serving as Acting City Manager. This supplements her current salary of $213,855.29 per annum. More info.
  • Approval of a Master License Agreement with Forged Fiber 37, LLC (“Forged Fiber”) authorizing them to access and use the city right of way (“ROW”) for telecommunications facilities. More info.
  • Approval of a grant application requesting $237,594 to help fund the new Lions Park playground. More info.
  • Approval of a $280K contract with an advertising firm to support Visit Golden. More info.
  • Intergovernmental Agreement with Intermountain Health, Golden Gate Fire, and Pleasant View Metro district "for Emergent and Non Emergent Ambulance and Related Medical Services." More info.
  • Appointment of three new members to the Golden Urban Renewal Authority board: Max Neumeyer, John Reinsma, and Allison Loftsgordon. More info.

Golden History: A Look Back at 1910

The August 25, 1910 Colorado Transcript provides an interesting glimpse of life in Golden in that era.

  • Golden was enveloped by smoke from fires in the northwest.
  • “Colonel” Theodore Roosevelt was expected in Denver the following week. (Roosevelt had actually served as President from 1901-1909…so why were they referring to him as “Colonel?”)
  • Plans were in place for a Jefferson County Fair, which would be held at Lakeside Amusement Park.
  • The Transcript was agitating to have gravel put on 10th Street. 44th Avenue (then called the “Golden-Denver Bouldevard”) was gravelled, and the Transcript worried that “automobilists, farmers and others who will travel over the new road (will) run directly from the perfect road in the country into deep dust or a muddy street as soon as they get within the city limits of Golden.”
  • “Golden Woman Saves Girl from Death” described a woman, vacationing in British Columbia, who saved a girl from drowning by reaching down from a dock and catching hold of her hair until assistance arrived. The editor modestly neglects to mention that the “Golden Woman” was his mother, widow of George West, founder of the Transcript. (Go Eliza!)
  • “Capital a Suffragette Stronghold” explains that whereas Suffragettes used wear “short hair, impossible frocks, a man’s hat and other cranky accompaniments of ‘queer views’,” the current cadre were more likely to be “modishly gowned, attractive and in most instances socially prominent…whose graces and talents are distinctly of the most feminine kind.” (The 19th Amendment was still 10 years in the future.)
  • The Dollison store advertised that “American Beauty Corsets make beautiful women.” (No doubt intended as an aid for aspiring Suffragettes.)

  • New owners were running the old French Smelter. They decided to assay the waste piles left by previous operators and learned that their dump was worth a fortune.
  • The Golden Gem theater was scheduled to show “Trailed to the Hills,” which was filmed in Jefferson County and featured a number of locals in the cast.
  • Fred Steinhauer had recently been appointed Superintendent of Denver Parks. Steinhauer was an 1899 Mines graduate and had been a baseball star during his time at the school. Steinhauer Field House is named after him.
  • The Sheriff had made a quick capture of a horse thief, having located and jailed him within a few hours after learning of the theft. He found the man in Denver, put him in jail, and soon had a confession. The stolen horses & wagon were located in Watkins (map).
