12-1PM Golden Women in Business Book Club @ The Golden Mill

As vacation time ends and we start thinking seriously about the back-to-school season, here's something to get our minds going again at Book Club. As always, you don't need to have read the book to attend; you just need to be interested in discussing its themes.

In The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, author Stephen R. Covey presents a holistic, integrated, principle-centered approach for solving personal and professional problems. With penetrating insights and pointed anecdotes, Covey reveals a step-by-step pathway for living with fairness, integrity, service, and human dignity--principles that give us the security to adapt to change and the wisdom and power to take advantage of the opportunities that change creates.

5:30 Golden Bike Cruise

The Golden Bike Cruise is a family friendly event featuring pedal bikes, beers and bands on the last Tuesday of the month - May through September. Tonight's (optional) costume theme is Barbie & Ken.

Hey Barbie! Get those Barbie/Ken vibes going! You know the drill - dress in costume, come hang out and drink some beer from New Terrain. Bob's Atomic will be back slinging the burgers. We know it's a school night but take a few hours off to come to one of Golden's best, most-loved family events!

We start at 5:30pm and will most likely wrap by 8:30pm due to the school thing. Our musical guest for the night is Dollhouse Thieves - back for a return engagement! Non-profit partner is BGOLDN - a great, Golden-based non-profit feeding kids and families. Grab your pink and c'mon out!

Beer - New Terrain Brewing
Burgers - Bob's Atomic
Band - Dollhouse Thieves

6:30PM City Council Meeting @ City Hall

Most of tonight's business appears on the "Consent Agenda," which means the topics will not be discussed unless one or more of the Councilors requests discussion.

Public Comment
There are no public hearings tonight, so if you want to contribute any comments you must do it by email (PublicComment@cityofgolden.net) or at the beginning of the meeting.

Consent Matters

Affordable Housing Projects in the Central Neighborhood
  • Adopt the Jefferson County Affordable Housing Blueprint
This document describes how the various jurisdictions within Jefferson County will partner to build more affordable housing. Their goals are to influence regional, state, and federal policy; maximize land use, housing, and transportation resources to add more housing, and facilitate partnerships among the jurisdictions to build more affordable housing.

Council received an overview of this plan at their last study session (start at 1 hr - 15 minutes). The presenter described the need to balance local control with regional needs. He remarked that this new framework will give a voice to the people who don't live here but want to.
  • Approve a construction contract for $121,850
This will improve the sidewalk drainage on Rimrock Drive.

Parfet Estates Drive
  • Approve parking permits for Parfet Estates Drive
This street is right across Highway 6 from the School of Mines campus. CSM students as well as construction workers from the CSM housing projects have been parking on the street. The meeting memo states that eliminating these non-resident parkers would improve safety for the residents.
  • Approve a contract to replace equipment at Splash
This contract allows up to $165,823 to replace the boiler on the lap pool at the City's water park.
  • First reading of an Ordinance regarding signage for marijuana stores
This ordinance clarifies how marijuana stores are allowed to advertise on their own buildings versus how they are allowed to advertise off-site, online, or through direct mail. They will hold a public hearing and vote on this issue at their September 10th meeting.

Golden History: Lime, Mortar, and the Cambria Kiln

By Paul Haseman and Donna Anderson

Formed in 1879 by John Hodges, the Cambria Brick and Tile Company was located at 12th and East St, now covered by south end of the Coors Brewery and parking lot. The Cambria company promptly “leased fire-clay and lime seams near Hoyt’s ranch,” located at the south end of today’s Illinois Street [Transcript 16 June 1879].

Golden businessman, Charles Welch, a Cambria investor, became the company Superintendent. Welch also conveniently co-owned the “lime seams” leased to Cambria and was the President of the Golden & South Platte RR. The G&SP began laying rail in 1879 from the Colorado Central Railyard, across Clear Creek on a former East St bridge, past Cambria’s new brick plant and then across Ford to now Jackson St. The curve in the current road linking Ford to Jackson is the original rail route to Jackson St (then Miners St). The route proceeded to today’s Golden High School, where a half-right turn took the rails southeast parallel to Kinney Run. A spur of the G&SP continued up Kinney Run to the new lime kiln.

The Cambria kiln was built in 1879 with sandstone of the Lyons Formation from the cliff behind the kiln and along Kinney Run. The kiln was conveniently located near the “lime seams” in the Glennon limestone (i.e. the “bastard” limestone descibed by geologist F.V. Hayden). Quarried in linear trenches along today’s Somerset Drive and across the Mines survey field, limestone was heated to high temperature in the Cambria kiln forming calcium oxide, or quicklime, which was then combined with water to make mortar. G&SP rail cars transported the quicklime to Hodges’ and Welch’s brickyard. An early brickyard customer in January 1880 was the School of Mines, which purchased 75,000 bricks to construct Mines’ first campus building.

The Cambria kiln operated 13 years until 1892, when the local lime seams were exhausted and cheaper and better Portland cement sidetracked the lime/mortar business in Golden.

In 2005 a City Council Resolution recognized “the unique geologic areas in the Eagle Ridge area (including the Dakota hog back, Cambria Lime Kiln, Kinney Run Trail, and riparian areas)” and designated them “as a geologic and environmental education park.” In 2009 the City and the Golden Civic Foundation restored the base of the kiln and placed interpretive signs. It is the only remaining lime kiln in Jeffco and a reminder of Golden’s mining history.

Donna Anderson and Paul Haseman published a book called Golden Rocks! about the geology and mining history of Golden. You can read it for free online!
