6-7:45PM Golden Beer Talks: Artificial Intelligence in Journalism

Featured Brewery: 6 and 40 Brewery
Introduction by: Barb Warden – GoldenToday.com
Tim Regan-Porter and Dan Grech will explore the evolving role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in journalism, addressing its potential to transform—for good and for ill—news. They will discuss how AI can enhance reporting, streamline workflows, and engage audiences in new ways, while also considering the ethical challenges, business model disruptions, and implications of relying on AI in journalism. This talk will offer insights into both the opportunities and pitfalls of AI in the media industry, providing practical examples of AI in journalism and exploring its potential evolution.

An evening hosted by Golden Beer Talks centers around a brief, informative and entertaining presentation by an expert on an irresistibly enticing topic. Each event features beer for sale from one of our local breweries, along with a variety of delicious food and drink offerings from the Buffalo Rose kitchen and bar.
It's Golden's own grassroots version of TED talks for the benefit of our own local community--and just for the fun of it. Golden Beer Talks is a nonprofit venture focused on three favorite local things--Golden and Beer and Talking!

Full Moon Tonight

Full Moon Silhouetting South Table Mountain - Photo by Jeremy Keller
The moon will rise at 7:03PM and be full at 8:36PM. It will set at 7:19 tomorrow morning. The sun will set at 7:04PM and rise at 6:44 tomorrow morning.
According to NASA, this will be the full moon, a supermoon, the harvest moon, and a partial lunar eclipse. NASA tells us that the peak time for the eclipse will be at 8:44PM Mountain Time.
If you've ever considered watching the full moon rising from the road on Mt. Zion, this might be a good night to do it. They plan to begin closing that road at night on November 11th, so there are only two full moons left for you to observe from that vantage point.
On the other hand, the September 2, 2024 comments sent to City Council had some hair-raising remarks (last letter in the list) about activity on that road, so weigh your options—a nice view of the full moon versus the possibility of gunshots.

Golden History: The Coors Greenhouses

For many years, Coors was known for the beautiful flowers that decorated their grounds and reception areas. They were grown in greenhouses and gardens on the brewery grounds. Transcript articles indicate that they began as a personal hobby of Coors family members. A 1910 article refers to banana trees in the greenhouse, “the special pride of Mr. Coors.” (That would be the original Mr. Coors, founder of the brewery.)
After his death, his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Adolph Coors Jr. (Alice), seems to have adopted the growing operation. She was well-known for personally arranging the flowers on display around offices and receptions areas. Even after she lost her eyesight later in life, she continued to arrange them ‘by feel.” She died in 1970.

The Coors family employed full-time gardeners to maintain their fields and greenhouses. During the Depression, they sold flowers. During World War II, they raised food as well as flowers in the greenhouse. The greenhouse occasionally hosted group tours and was a favorite destination for the Golden Garden Club.
The greenhouse was adjacent to the Coors family home. When the home was moved to make way for brewery expansion, the old greenhouses were demolished. A new, larger greenhouse (60×176 ft) was built in 1961.

A 2012 thread on Reddit mentioned that the greenhouse was being demolished at that time: “There’s also a greenhouse right next to it that supplies the flowers in the bldg and tour (but they’re tearing it down).”

A current satellite view of the brewery shows that the greenhouses are, indeed, gone.
