Autumn Equinox

Today marks the autumn equinox--the point at which the days and nights are of approximately equal length. The days will be shorter each day until the winter solstice, which happens on December 21st.

The sun will rise at 6:47AM and set at 6:56PM.

The clocks will change on November 1st.

Golden Parks and Recreation is using DeLong Park as a pilot project for the City’s first organic park location. This means that they will be using only natural, organic products for all plants and grasses. No synthetic chemicals will be used in our maintenance practices.

The DeLong Park Weed Busters are always happy to bring in new members, and training on weed identification is provided! More information

10-11:30AM Community Marketing Board Meeting @ City Hall Council Chambers

The meeting will start with public comment.

The board will then discuss a proposed sponsorship of the KOSI 101.1 holiday season. Last night the Downtown Development Authority agreed to contribute $7500 to this effort. The Community Marketing Board will decide whether to contribute an additional $7500. The Golden Hotel will contribute $2000. Visit Golden will then run commercials on KOSI throughout the holiday season, interspersed among their all-holiday music/all the time programming. The goal is to increase holiday visitation, shopping, dining, and overnight stays.

Finally, they will discuss the downtown banners. This includes the banners on light poles and the banner under the arch.

6:30-9PM City Council Business Meeting @ City Hall Council Chambers

5PM Executive Session

City Council will meet at 5PM and go into executive session (no audience, no recordings) "for a conference with Special Counsel to receive legal advice on specific legal issues regarding the nature and scope of the investigation to be conducted by the third-party investigator regarding the March 2026 incident at the City of Golden Fire Department." This is the incident that resulted in terminating a fire fighter, the Fire Chief, and the City Manager.

They will reconvene at 6:30 to start the regular business meeting.

Public Comment

The meeting begins with public comment. If you want to address Council, you will have three minutes to speak. Any public comments received by email before 3PM will be posted in the meeting packet after 3 (so check back then).

Items on the Consent Agenda are considered non-controversial, not needing discussion. All items in this section will be approved with a single vote.

Any councilor wishing to discuss a consent issue can request that it be removed from the consent agenda and discussed and voted on separately.

These are the items on tonight's Consent Agenda:

  • IGA (Intergovernmental Agreement) to allow the Jefferson County Clerk and Recorder’s Office to use Golden City Hall as a Voter Service and Polling Center (VSPC) for the November election. More.
  • IGA between Golden and Jefferson County, Edgewater, Lakewood, Westminster, and Wheat Ridge to share the state funding for affordable housing. This year, Golden has exceeded the state's requirements for building new unit, so it may choose to give the state's funding to another member of the "consortium" so they can build their own affordable housing units. More.
  • IGA with Jefferson County to allow the City to purchase fuel from the County during "emergencies, fuel supply disruptions, or other circumstances when the City’s normal fueling resources are unavailable or insufficient." More.
  • IGA with Jefferson County, Arvada, Edgewater, Lakewood, Westminster, and Wheat Ridge to collaborate in providing shelter for the homeless during cold weather emergencies. More.
  • IGA with Jefferson County, Arvada, Edgewater, Lakewood, Westminster, and Wheat Ridge regarding use of the Homeless Navigation Center, which is located in Lakewood. More.
  • Memoradum of Understanding with Jefferson County concerning cold weather response for the homeless. More.

Downtown Parking

The City is establishing a new permit parking district at Jackson and Water Streets (near Parfet Park, the Gold Apartments, Gold Office Building, and the Golden Mill). More.

Recruiting a New City Manager

Mayor Weinberg will discuss plans to find a new City Manager. The process is expected to take 3-6 months. They may use internal staff to locate an internal candidate or may hire an outside firm to conduct an external search. The search for a statewide or internal search would cost approximately $10-12K. A nationwide search would cost approximately $35-40K. More.

Waiting for the Train – Part 2
Golden-ites were filled with anticipation of the first train of the Colorado Central, scheduled to arrive on September 23rd, 1870. Unfortunately, progress was delayed.  A massive rainstorm began on the 21st and continued into the 22nd, making work on the railroad line impossible.  The weather cleared on the 23rd and the first train arrived & was celebrated on the 26th.  (I’ll tell you about that tomorrow.)

The Colorado Central was already bringing changes to Golden.  A new commission house had opened near the depot, where goods could be stored, shipped, traded, or sold.  The Colorado Stage Company, which had been offering stagecoach service from Denver to the mountain towns, was moving from Denver to Golden.  It was assumed that travelers would now take the first part of the trip by train, then transfer to stagecoach in Golden.

In anticipation of growth to come, the Colorado Transcript had just finished its building on Washington Avenue, and a new hotel was built at 13th and Arapahoe.  The Doolittle livery company had built a new stone stable and had added “a splendid barouche” to their line of carriages and buggies.  In a nod to the times, the business was renamed “Colorado Central Livery Stable.”  Likewise, a new meat market was named “C. C. R. R. Meat Market” (Colorado Central Railroad).

The Transcript reminded ladies that in a few days, they would be able to take the train to Denver to shop.  At the same time, they advertised, “NO MORE GOING TO DENVER TO SAVE MONEY!” because Golden merchants would be able to import their merchandise so easily and economically, ensuring competitive prices.

Part of the reason the town’s founders were so anxious to have a railroad was the town’s declining population. The 1860 census, at the height of the gold rush, had found 1,014 residents in Golden. The 1870 census counted only 587. Without a significant economic boost (such as a railroad), Golden would be well on its way to oblivion. The railroad did the job; by 1880, we had a population of 2,730.

The railroad brought immediate benefits to Golden, but the primary reason for the railroad was to bring rail service to the mining towns (Blackhawk, Central City, Idaho Springs, and Georgetown).  As soon as the tracks reached Golden, construction continued westward into Clear Creek Canyon.
