7:30-9AM Citizens Budget Advisory Committee Meeting @ City Hall Council Chambers

CBAC will review our sales and use tax revenues (as they do every month).

They will hear a report on the various Public Works projects currently underway. Some of the projects may be delayed by the uncertain Federal funding. City staff will update the group on any particularly finance-affecting city business.

Loretta Huff has begun writing a series of articles for GoldenToday. The goal is to help residents understand the City's large and complex budget. Our approach is to cover small areas in very short, easily-digestible articles. The three articles we've published so far have been very well-received. CBAC has dedicated 15 minutes on today's agenda to discussing these articles.

4-6PM Golden StArt 5th Anniversary Party @ Foothills Art Center - Astor House

The Golden Public Art Commission, in collaboration with Foothills Art Center, is excited to invite you to a special celebration marking the 5th Anniversary of the Golden StArt Program. Join us on Wednesday, April 16th, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Foothills Art Center, at Astor House location at 1133 Arapahoe Street, Golden, Colorado.

Over the past five years, the Golden StART Program has succeeded in bringing together art, artists, and art enthusiasts, fostering opportunities for learning and celebration through coffee meetups and happy hours.

This milestone anniversary will feature the work of two distinguished artists: Angela Schwab, the architect responsible for the updates to the historic Astor House, and Robert Tully, a prominent Colorado sculptor who will unveil his new piece titled “Yucca” in Triangle Park.

This is an excellent opportunity to connect with many artists who have contributed to the program, engage with Golden Public Art Commissioners, and mingle with city leaders and fellow art lovers while exploring the galleries.

Complimentary appetizers and drinks will be provided. Don’t miss out on this exciting evening!

5:30PM Planning Commission Meeting @ City Hall

First Case - 211 Lookout View Drive

211 Lookout View Drive (map) is currently an empty lot, but the owner plans to build a house there. The lot is strangely-shaped, with a curved cutout in the front yard. This is a remnant of the original street layout in that neighborhood, which was platted in 1950. Lookout View was originally a cul de sac, which ended at that yard. The curved area provided a turnaround at the end of the street.

This ad, which appeared in the June 7, 1951 Colorado Transcript, shows Lookout View Drive with its original cul-de-sac, before the street was extended. - Enlarge

In 1959, the street was extended up the hill, and that spot ceased to be a turnaround. Since the City hasn't needed that bulb-out since 1959, the owner has asked that the land be vacated so it can be used with the house (and garage)-to-be. Planning Commission will consider this request and made a recommendation to City Council. Council has the ultimate say on vacating public rights of way.

Second Case - 2120 Bonvue Drive

The owners of the A-Frame house at 2120 Bonvue Drive (map) want to build a 2-car garage with an office above the garage. Since the property is extremely steep (on the side of Mt. Zion), the only place to put it is at the front of the property. It will require that the City vacate some of the right-of-way.

The City's Public Works Department evaluated the proposal. They concluded that the remaining right of way (street) would still be adequate. The adjacent neighbors have no objection.

The Planning Commission will consider the request and give their recommendation to City Council.

6:30-8PM Waterwise Yard Seminar - Right Plant, Right Place… Right Practice! (Virtual)

The Front Range along the Colorado Rockies, as well as the Intermountain Western United States, is part of one of the major steppe regions of the world, and as such has challenging climactic conditions. Successful landscape design in the steppe region demands specific horticultural best practices that are unique to this geographic region. Sustainable landscape design provides a sense of place by using the design principle right plant, right place. Join us as we discuss right practice – tips developed at Denver Botanic Gardens to ensure long-term, functioning landscapes in our unique steppe climate. We’ll discuss soil amendments, planting practices, watering recommendations, mulch, and of course – plants! Great for all levels of gardeners.

Golden History: The City Upon a Hill

The spiral drive is Goldco Circle - Google Satellite Image

I’ve been studying the history of Golden’s residential neighborhoods, particularly after World War II, and came across a 1957 advertisement for new houses on Goldco Circle.

For close to a century, the hill on which Goldco Circle is built was known as “Cemetery Hill.” Golden’s first cemetery was placed there, beginning in 1859. Burials continued in that location until the “new” (our current) Golden Cemetery was platted in 1873. At that time, the graves were supposed to have been removed from Cemetery Hill. The job was done poorly.

A 1922 Colorado Transcript article mentioned that “on a fallen tombstone, one can read the name of Henry W. Frink, who died October 12, 1860…. His fallen tombstone is the only one in the old Golden cemetery on which the inscription is still legible.” As late as 1962, the Transcript was reporting, “Police…received a report of another open grave showing up on old Cemetery hill in North Golden with bones falling out of it.”

In the 1930s, there was much talk of building a road to the top of the hill and using it as a scenic overlook–a tourist attraction. It does have great views!
