The Special Events Review Committee will evaluate recent special events (4th of July, Saturday Farmer’s Market, Midweek Farmer’s Market, July Movies & Music in the Park) and discuss upcoming events:

Grant Request by "Dream Tank."
This new program is led by former City Councilor JJ Trout and current Mayor Laura Weinberg, along with a "Golden Community Council" that includes members of the City's REDI (Race, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) Task Force. The program's goal is to enlist the City's youth (ages 8-18, plus School of Mines Students) to solve civic programs such as food insecurity, mental health, and public policy. The $3000 would pay for two consultants to facilitate the introductory session. For more information, see pp. 3-11 of the meeting packet.
The Committee will review their mission statement and discuss a proposed revision to the grant program. The meeting packet does not describe the proposed change, but other city grant programs are changing so that city staff, rather than citizen committees, make the funding decisions.

The REDI (Race, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion) Task Force is composed of community members and city staff who have a key role in implementing aspects of the REDI Action Plan, finalized by the City in November of 2022.
The Task Force focuses on promoting accountability for implementing the REDI Action Plan and coordinating community-wide efforts to advance equity. The public is welcome to attend. More information

Golden History: Busy, Busy, Busy with the Post-War Housing Boom

In the years after World War II, Golden’s population exploded and houses were being built all over town. The July 22, 1948 Transcript announced that the City’s new gravel crusher would soon be in operation. Golden had long been platted as far south as 24th Street, but most of those streets were theoretical, with few or no houses along them. With new subdivisions popping up all over town, the City had a sudden need for large volumes of gravel to build new streets. On July 22nd, Vernon Drive (a one-block street between 21st and 23rd Streets) was waiting for its load of gravel.
The Welch ditch goes through that neighborhood, and the new roads required bridges to cross the ditch. 21st and 23rd Streets had automobile bridges. 22nd Street dead-ended, with Vernon Drive on the other side of the ditch. City workers built a pedestrian bridge at that spot.
The City and the Martin Construction Company were also installing a 5-foot culvert at 21st and Ford Streets that week. Three new houses were being built near that intersection.
