Birdseye view of the burned area - photo by Henry Tiberi

There was a significant grass fire in New Loveland Mine Park (map) yesterday afternoon. It came so close to near-by homes that residents were evacuated. The incident was called in at 3:21PM and closed at 5PM. Firefighters from Golden, Pleasant View, and Fairmount all turned out to extinguish the fire.

Many thanks to Chris Davell for his on-site reporting!

I happened to notice the moon Monday morning, as it was headed down for the day. The air was thick, and moon had an orange tint.

Later that day, Joyce Davell sent this photo of hang gliders soaring around Mt. Zion. The air was still murky, tinted pink at that time of the day.

The summer of 2020 was surreal for many reasons. People were just starting to come out of seclusion as public health experts urged us to get outdoors, but stay away from each other. Masks and hand sanitizer were in high demand and hard to find. Grocery store shelves were half-empty. Everyone was learning how to use Zoom.

Just to make life a little more surreal and post-apocalyptic, there were wild fires all over the west, and we lived through day after day of smoke-filled air. The one bright spot with that poor air quality was the spectacular sunrises and sunsets.

That was the year I introduced the daily Golden Eye Candy feature, and many of that summer's photos featured orange suns. I hope you enjoy reviewing one of my happier memories of 2004. Thanks to all the photographers!

Golden Transcript

When I was a kid raised here in Golden, I had a lot of dreams and ambitions. I went through the same phases everybody does when they think about what they want to be when they grow up. Usually, it’s based on some experience we had or even on a movie or television show we saw. For a while I wanted to be like my GI Joe character, then I wanted to be a Formula 1 Grand Prix driver, then there was a brief time when being a doctor sounded good, they seemed to make a lot of money while helping people...
