As of press time, Democrats had taken the majorities in both the house and the senate. It looked like Colorado was generally following the national trend, but many races & ballot issues were still too close to call. See the Colorado Secretary of State's website for the current counts.

5:30-7PM Contemplative Memoir @ Foothills Art Center - Creative Campus

Writing a memoir may be the most challenging and consequential writing we will ever do. We think we know ourselves well enough to write about our lives, but the effort seems daunting, and its value dubious. After all, how do we begin to choose which stories to tell from all the days and years? And who cares? First of all, no life is ordinary. No life is without miracles and magic, great loss and great love. And probably no life is more crucial for our children to understand then ours, because they share more than our genetics, they share our spiritual DNA. What made us who we are, helps them see who they can become. In that sense, we leave them with more than stories. We leave them with meaning and hope. More information

6-7:30PM Donut Dollies @ Golden History Museum

Terre Deegan-Young states that she has been questioned often why a woman would “volunteer” to go to a war zone, especially right out of college. She explains how the turbulent 1960s and her family values led to this life-changing decision to join the American Red Cross and be assigned to Vietnam. She will explain the military’s request of ARC to provide a mobile recreation program that brings a “touch of home” to soldiers fighting in combat zones. Through pictures coupled with humorous and heartbreaking stories, Terre will talk about her very personal experience during her tour of duty. She also addresses her return to the US, re-entry into “normal life” and, as with other veterans from Vietnam, a less than welcoming reception.

Terre packed the Buffalo Rose when she spoke at Golden Beer Talks two years ago. This is a great opportunity to hear her in a more intimate environment. As of last night, there were still a few tickets available! If they're not available online, call the museum (303-278-3557) to ask about last-minute cancelations.

495 Jackson - Google Street images

They will consider a case for495 Jackson St. (map). This lot is zoned R1, which means single family homes. There is a currently a home on the site. The owner wants to build a second home on the empty half of the lot and recharacterize the existing home as an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU).

Architect's rendering (top) and Google satellite image (bottom)

In order to do this, they are asking the Commission to approve several departures from R1 zoning code:

  1. Major Adjustment for Additional Total Floor Area (3,455 SF vs. 3,000 SF allowed)
  2. Major Adjustment for Rear BEA Lot Coverage (~85% existing vs. 40% allowed)
  3. Major Adjustment for Garage Location in the Front BEA (vs. middle or rear BEA required)
  4. Major Adjustment for Garage Door Setback (11 ft vs. 20 ft required from side street lot line)
  5. Variance for Oversized ADU (1,116 SF of living space (1,655 SF, including the 539 SF covered porch) vs. 800 SF maximum)

Learn more.

Case 2: 18201 W 10th Ave

Xcel property - Google satellite image

Xcel energy has a 56 acre campus (map) near Fossil Trace, Splash, and the Lookout Mountain School. Their Original Development plan laid out a 75,000 square foot area for outdoor equipment storage. They are asking the Planning Commission to approve an increase in outdoor storage area to 183,000 square feet. Learn more.

Annexation Plan

The "sphere of influence" claimed by Golden and other western suburbs - enlarge

Discussion and Public Hearing: The Planning Commission will discuss the City’s Annexation Plan. This is an annual exercise required by the state, in which the City reviews surrounding areas and evaluates the pros, cons, complications, etc., of annexing property in that area. The City was not actively pursuing any annexations, but recently agreed to annex the area at the northern border when approached by the property owners. Since annexation means the City becomes responsible for providing infrastructure (water, sewer, roads, etc.), we need good reasons to agree to it. “Good reasons” can include

  1. Control and manage the location and character of future growth and development
  2. To make the City boundaries more cohesive, organized and logical
  3. To achieve economic development goals
  4. To protect and control the environment of the City and its perimeter.

Golden History: Backyard Poultry on an Industrial Scale

Colorado Transcript – November 4, 1966

We may think of backyard poultry as part of the modern trend toward urban agriculture. In fact, it’s anything but: most houses in Golden used to keep a few birds on hand, for both meat and eggs. Some families kept more than a few.

The former Peery turkey ranch - 2008 photo from Google Street Images

The November 4, 1966 Colorado Transcript described Mayford Peery’s turkey ranch at 502 Ford Street (map). The Peerys owned the Golden Mill and started small, raising six turkeys for personal consumption in 1945. That went well, so the next year they raised 100, then 600, then 1,000, and up from there. Some years were more profitable than others, depending on the market price.

The article described the cycle, beginning with receipt of the day-old “poults” (baby turkeys), which spent 4-1/2 weeks living indoors under heat lamps, followed by several months outdoors. Each bird ate a pound of food a day

At 21 weeks, they were ready for processing. This was done onsite by Mr. and Mrs. Peery and their employees–plucking, cleaning, eviscerating, and packaging.

The Peerys raised several other varieties of poultry–pheasants, quail, and partridges–but said that turkeys were the friendliest. In fact, they advised against talking to the turkeys. “Unless you want 5000 turkeys talking to you at once, don’t even open your mouth! If you do they’ll answer–and loud!”
