8:30AM Special Events Review Committee Meeting @ City Hall Council Chambers

The meeting will begin with public comment. After that, the Special Events Review Committee will assess recent events:

10-11:30AM Front Porch: Museum of Earth Science @ Golden Community Center

Join other active older adults for a day trip. Trips with transportation provided leave from the Golden Community Center and the cost includes transportation and admission. Meet-up trips do not include transportation. Unless otherwise specified, the cost of lunch is not included.

Hop on the Ore Cart waiting for you just outside the Front Porch’s 8th Street entrance with our guide and Golden Community Center member Jim Burnell. Jim has A.B., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in geology/geochemistry.  He has worked as a geologist in several different fields, from university teaching to national laboratory research, private consulting and, at the end of his career, with the Colorado Geological Survey, now headquartered on the CSM campus. Jim will walk you through the Earth Science Museum for this special one-hour tour. There is no cost for transportation to and from the Golden Community Center and no cost for museum entry. This program is free, but registration is required. Register

1-3PM Cheers to Our Rocky Mountain Water Clear Creek Cleanup @ Golden Welcome Center

Molson Coors Beverage Company will host a Clear Creek cleanup as part of its Cheers to Our Rocky Mountain Water (CTORMW) program. The event will bring together Molson Coors employees, community partners and volunteers to help protect a waterway that has been closely connected to the company and the Golden community for more than 150 years.

Molson Coors will provide safety vests, gloves, trash bags, and drinking water. Volunteers will also receive a free hat and a complimentary drink ticket redeemable at the Golden Mill, with alcoholic and nonalcoholic options available. Alcoholic beverages are limited to guests 21 and older.

The cleanup will take place rain or shine. Please dress accordingly. More information.

4:30-6PM REDI Task Force Meeting @ City of Golden Planning and Public Works

The REDI (Race, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion) Task Force is composed of community members and city staff who have a key role in implementing aspects of the REDI Action Plan, finalized by the City in November of 2022.

The Task Force focuses on promoting accountability for implementing the REDI Action Plan and coordinating community-wide efforts to advance equity. The public is welcome to attend. More information

6-8:30PM Community Sustainability Advisory Board Meeting @ City Hall Council Chambers

Tonight's meeting will cover the following topics:

  • Public Electric Vehicle Charging Station policy review
  • 2027 Budget Request
  • Universal Recycling Ordinance

The Clayworks (CoorsTek) development has asked to amend their Planned Unit Development to allow increased use of natural gas. Tonight's meeting packet includes the sustainability board's comments to City Council. The board expressed reservations about some of the proposed uses of natural gas, including heating a year-round outdoor pool and gas-powered outdoor fireplaces and space heaters. See pp 7-9 of the meeting packet.

The board will review the use of the Cities public charging stations for electric vehicles. (pp 10-14)

Golden History: It's Here!

156 Years Ago
On September 26, 1870 Golden celebrated the arrival of the Colorado Central Railroad. The Transcript waxed poetic:

(The day) …dawned as lovely as ever smiled upon the world. Not a cloud could be seen in the heavens, and the air was as balmy as early spring. Long before the “dapp’d grey coursers of the morn” pranced up the smiled east our beautiful valley was awakened by sounds of bursting torpedoes and rattling of musketry. As the sun cast its first bright rays upon the mountain tops, the church bells rang out their cheerful peals, and the different locomotives at the depot took up the refrain with their shrill whistles and bells, and the whole valley was filled with rejoicing and gladness.

The first train arrived from Denver at 8AM, and the second arrived at 1PM. Those who arrived on that train reported that thousands had been left at the depot in Denver because there wasn’t room to board. The train was sent back to collect more people. The Transcript estimated that about 4,000 people participated in the party.

At about 10AM, wagon loads of celebrants from Gilpin County arrived. They were excited, because the next phase of building would extend the line to Blackhawk, where it would serve their gold mines.

The ceremony started at 3PM. William Loveland, who had been working toward this day for six years, presented gold and silver spikes to dignitaries, who drove them into place, signifying the completion of the road. The gold spike had been provided by citizens of Gilpin County (gold mines) and the silver spike was furnished by a citizen of Georgetown (silver mines).

There were many flowery speeches. Telegrams of congratulation were read from President Grant, other railroads, and major cities. Local dignitaries responded to the telegrams with flowery prose such as “Colorado, the brightest star in the Territorial galaxy.”

George West and the September 28, 1870 Colorado Transcript

In the next issue of the Colorado Transcript, George West (the Owner/Publisher) could barely contain his enthusiasm and produced many columns of tiny text with detailed descriptions of the event. At last, he reluctantly returned to other news topics. Suddenly, in the midst of the “Local Matters” section, another burst of excitement erupted, and he wrote the most heartfelt paragraph in the 156-year life of the Transcript:

We have no word of apology for the amount of space occupied this week by railroad matters. We feel good. In fact, we feel like a shooting star. Our railroad is finished and we are all hunky-dory.
