9:30AM-2PM Perfect Your Binding at the Quilt Museum - SOLD OUT

Love it or hate it - your binding has to live up to the beauty of your quilt. This 4 hour class will give you the opportunity to learn, then actually apply perfect binding to a placemat sized project that you provide to class. Then you get to ask all those burning questions you still have - like how to bind scallops and other specially shaped edges.
If you have a project or pattern that you've been postponing because you don't quite feel secure in your binding skills or techniques, bring it with you and get some tips.

As part of the multi-year project to rewrite our zoning code, staff has been working on a document to define allowable land uses for each zone. Commission members will review this first draft.
If you're wondering what would be permitted where you live:
Use the City's zoning map to determine your zone type (RE, R1, etc.).
1. Go to the interactive map.
2. Agree to their terms.
3. Click the Layers icon.
4. Check Use Zone.
5. Zoom in to the area of interest.
Check the Land Use Definition Matrix to see which uses are allowed in your zone.
You might also want to check nearby areas. You might be surprised to find what's allowed close to where you live!
My Questions:
I had the following question. I'm sharing the staff response, in case any of my readers had the same question.
1 Could a group home be administratively approved for a residential area (RE, R1, R2, R3)? "Group home" would include residents with behavioral or mental health disorders, substance disorders, and up to one sex offender. I see that in addition to administrative review, a group home would require public notice and comment. Could the public stop this by expressing that they don't want it, or does that power lie only with the administrator?
A. Staff is recommending having group-homes be approved administratively as long as they meet certain use-standards. Use standards may be distance requirements, parking, and limits to operations that align with current policy. The recommendation considers state statue where group-homes are to be allowed where housing is allowed. Notice and comment may be similar to how we put notice regarding certain administratively approved subdivisions. Even if group-homes went to a public hearing, there is a question how readily the City could deny them if they meet the requirements without the decision being questioned as unreasonable, arbitrary, or capricious.

Golden History: The Elusive Big Strike

Colorado Transcript - September 4, 1901
The September 4, 1901 Colorado Transcript included an article reviewing various mining prospects in Jefferson County. Although the county never produced much in the way of metal, the Transcript never stopped hoping that this would be the site of the next gold rush (or silver rush, or any other profitable metal).

Undoubtedly the best prospect yet opened up in the foot hills near Golden is Henry’s Koch’s claim on his patented ground on the eastern slope of Lookout mountain and in plain view from this city. Mr. Koch has uncovered a ten-foot vein of mineral which runs from 12 to 30 per center, copper and from $3 to $5 in Gold, average about $20 per ton.
Colorado Transcript – Sept 4, 1901.
You might wonder why you’ve never heard of this oh-so-promising mine. Henry Koch owned the eastern slope of Lookout mountain for about 40 years, and for most of that time, he was on the verge of a big mining strike.
We do not desire to appear inordinately jubilant over the discovery of the new copper fields in the immediate vicinity of Golden, but from all appearances we are on the eve of a veritable boom that will have a substantial bottom. The discovery by Mr. Henry Koch of almost pure native copper…is instigating a large amount of prospecting by practical miners. Colorado Transcript – Nov 14, 1883
Henry Koch is more encouraged than in years before…. A ton of ore from his tunnel…yielded eleven ounce s of silver, two dollars and fifty cents. Colorado Transcript – December 15, 1904
Henry Koch is again putting considerable time in his mine…and last week struck a the most promising vein yet encountered. Colorado Transcript – February 24, 1910

Henry Koch died in 1920 without ever making the big strike. He is buried in the Golden Cemetery. His land is now part of the Beverly Heights subdivision and student housing for the Colorado School of Mines.
