Buffaloes, pastured and fattened In Jefferson county, are to go on the eastern market at novelty prices, according to Walter B. Lowery, manager of parks and improvements for the city of Denver. Thirty bulls and cows from the herd at Genesee park have been segregated from the 33 other buffaloes of the herd and are being especially fed for market.

The buffalo herd just west of Golden (map) was established in 1914, soon after the Denver Mountain Parks system was created. At that point, the animals were near extinction, but several buffalo were brought down from Yellowstone. They thrived in their new Colorado home, and soon, Denver Mountain Parks began culling the herd, putting several animals up for auction each year.

In 2021, the City of Denver began donating the culled buffalo to Indigenous tribes, rather than auctioning them. Learn more about the history of the herd.
