Joe was the youngest of three brothers. All grew up in a cottage on the brewery grounds. The oldest boy, Adoph Coors III, was born in 1915 and was salutatorian (2nd-highest GPA) at his junior high graduation in 1929. The middle son, Bill, was valedictorian of his 8th grade class in 1930, and Joe completed the run as valedictorian in 1931.

Adolph III, grandson of the brewery founder, was the heir apparent to the brewing company. He was serving as CEO when he was kidnapped and murdered in 1960. After Ad’s death, brothers Bill and Joe ran the brewery and the porcelain company (now CoorsTek).
