Fire Chief Jack Goudge hands off Golden's Liberty Bell to Jerry Morgan of the Jaycees Colorado Transcript - July 6, 1967 - Click to enlarge

The July 6, 1967 Colorado Transcript reported that the Golden Fire Department was presenting Golden's Liberty Bell to the City. Golden Jaycees were planning to build a concrete platform for the bell in front of City Hall.

The bell was originally used to call firefighters to action. During the celebrations after the Armistice was declared at the end of World War I, people rang the bell for so many hours non-stop that it finally cracked. After that, it became “Golden’s Liberty Bell.” The cracked bell was installed in a place of honor in front of the city hall/fire station.

By 1967, we had a new City Hall and people thought the bell should move to a new place of honor, in front of the new city hall. The Jaycees built a concrete platform, and that year's Veteran's Day ceremony was held next to the bell.

The platform had been upgraded by the time the Liberty Bell celebrated its 50th anniversary, in 1968:

The bell is currently installed in a tower next to the City Hall front door. The plan is to move it to the new City Hall.
