The May 30, 1935 Colorado Transcript announced that former President Herbert Hoover would be receiving an honorary doctorate at the Mines graduation. As big fans of President Roosevelt, the Transcript was clearly scrambling for something nice to say about his predecessor. The best they could come up with was that–as an engineer–he had probably worked hard as a college student.

A Presidential visit is a big deal (even one you don’t like), so I expected to find a photo and an article about this Presidential visit in the following week’s Transcript. Instead, they covered it in two sentences at the bottom of page 2, column 2, under the header “Short Miscellany.”
