During World War II, many states passed laws prohibiting property ownership by Japanese alien residents. Some in Colorado thought we should be doing the same.
The March 9, 1944 Colorado Transcript describes a petition to the Secretary of State proposing that Japanese aliens be barred from owning property in Colorado. Many people in Golden had signed the petition. The proposal was turned into a bill, which passed in the State House of Representatives but was defeated in the State Senate. After that, it was put on the statewide ballot but was again defeated.
The March 9, 1944 Transcript ran an editorial on the subject as follows:
WHAT COLOR ARE KKK ROBES THIS TIME?
What a moronic question for anyone to ask? It was prompted, no doubt, by so many people not wanting the Japanese to buy land in Colorado. The clothing being worn now is not called a robe but a uniform, and the color is khaki and navy blue. The men and women wearing these uniforms—there are no hoods, they are unafraid—are going to fight at home and abroad until every person or nation, dictator or tyrant, regardless of color, race, or creed, who would enslave mankind, is forever banished from the earth.
