The July 18, 1907 Colorado Transcript included pictures of the Washington Avenue bridge, still badly damaged from a flood that happened a week earlier.
A cloudburst in Clear Creek canyon on July 9th caused the creek to flood. This in turned washed out several railroad bridges. The wreckage from the railroad bridges rushed into Golden and crashed into the Washington Avenue bridge, causing it to sag down into the creek.

The bridge failure was exacerbated when a water main under the bridge failed. The water escaping from the pipe contributed to washing away the bridge supports.
