Public Comment

The meeting begins with public comment. If you want to address Council, you will have three minutes to speak. Any public comments received by email before 3PM will be posted in the meeting packet after 3 (so check back then!).

Items on the Consent Agenda are considered non-controversial, not needing discussion. Everything in this section will be approved at once, with one vote.

Any councilor wishing to discuss one of the issues can request that it be removed from the consent agenda and discussed and voted on separately.

These are the items on the Consent Agenda:

  • Councilors Reed and Haseman have been working with the City Attorney on some changes to Council Rules. Learn more.
Circled area shows where the sidewalk was built on private property - enlarge
  • When DeLong Park was constructed, the City added stairs and a sidewalk to make the park accessible from the south (24th Street) as well as the north side (23rd Street). They accidentally built the sidewalk on private property belonging to an adjacent homeowner. The homeowner pointed out the error at the time and continued to bring it up, most recently in 2024. The City had the area re-surveyed and agreed that they had built over private property.

Two consent matters on tonight's agenda are intended to rectify the error. The first item is an agreement with the City's contract engineering firm, which agrees to take responsibility and pay $87,000 for the land they built over. The money will go to the City, which will use it to purchase the property and to pay for a fence. The second item is the agreement between the City and the property owner. The City will pay $80,000 for the land and an additional $7,000 for a fence.

Local residents had been aware of the surveyor's stakes, and there was considerable neighborhood discussion about their import. Speculation was rampant that yet another affordable housing project was being planned (which would be the fourth in that area). This should reduce local stress levels.

Proclamation:

They will celebrate June 16th, the anniversary of the forming of the town, as Golden Day.
