The May 22, 1867 Colorado Transcript included several interesting business references. Since the presses of the time couldn’t reproduce photographs, I’ll augment the articles with some photos below.

SOCIAL DANCE–“Our young Folks” are to have another dance at Fisher & Cass’ Hall this (Wednesday) evening. Kellogg will do the music. Come one, come all.
Fisher & Cass was a wholesale grocer, but they made their second floor available for public meetings and social events.

ANOTHER NURSERY–Work has been progressing very quietly for several days upon the beautiful little island adjoining our town, in preparing ground for an extensive nursery.
In the town’s earliest days, the Creek followed a more meandering path along several channels. This created “islands” (or sandbars). The largest of the islands was near the spot where Coors brewery was later built. It apparently had enough soil to sustain trees, because the Transcript described it has having “a luxuriant growth of young cottonwoods, box elders, willows, etc.”

CHENEY–During the whole of the past week workmen have been engaged in putting a new face upon the inside affairs of the old Chicago Saloon, by placing upon the walls new paper, moving and refitting the bar.
Cheney’s Chicago Saloon was one of Golden’s earliest businesses, established at 11th and Washington before the Civil War. As part of this refurbishment he was installing two new billiard tables.

THE TANNERY–Mr. C. C. Welch…[will] arrive shortly, when work upon their new tannery at this place [will] be commenced and vigorously pushed to completion.
The tannery was built and in 1873 was sold to Adolph Coors and Jacob Schueler. That building was the birthplace of Coors Brewing!
