It was a nice day for a long Sunday drive last week the sun warm yet the smell of Indian Summer in the air and best of all, the family car purring along on 25.9 cent-a-gallon gasoline!

On this date in 1963, Golden's residents were enjoying strong competition on gas prices. Responding to a price war in Denver, Golden's gas stations were dropping their prices to keep their usual customers. While this was great for consumers, the station owners were gloomier about the situation.

One local dealer, with 9,000 gallons in his storage tank at the higher refinery cost, watched in dismay as his station enjoyed its biggest Sunday . . . with money lost every time a car came into the driveway.
