The February 8, 1962 Colorado Transcript featured this photo of the Linder Block being demolished. This building had stood at 13th and Washington since the late 1880s. It was making way for a new building for Hested’s Department Store,
Safeway was also building a new store. Their supermarket at 12th and Ford was too small for Golden’s growing population, so they were building a new store behind the old one, still at 12th and Ford. The “old” (1951) store was going to be demolished to make a bigger parking lot.
