The October 30, 1867 Colorado Transcript was full of news about growth in Golden.
The Overland Hotel (now the Buffalo Rose Events Center) was under construction. It would have an office, parlor, a dining room for 50, three apartments, and a kitchen on the first floor. The second floor would have a large hall (meeting room) and nine sleeping rooms. “The rooms are large and airy, well lighted and heated.”
The Golden Mill was already in operation, but two other grist mills were under construction–the Rock Flour Mill on 9th Street and the Fitzgerald Mill at 11th and Washington (where the Golden Hotel is now).
The Golden Paper Mill was nearly completed, and would soon be in operation on 9th Street, next to the Rock Flour Mill.
The Harrison block, newly-completed, was already being enlarged. Mr. Harrison was adding a second floor, which was “to be used as a public hall for lectures, dancing, &c.” The Harrison Block now includes Creekside Jewelers and Del’s Tonsorial Parlor.
Calvary Church was also under construction “It has one of the finest locations in town, and will be very ornamental as well as a valuable addition to the place. Our impatience to see it completed is shared by many of our town’s-people.”
The Overland Hotel, Rock Four Mill, and Golden Paper Mill are gone, but the Harrison Block and Calvary Church are still with us.
