11AM-4PM The American Revolution Experience Traveling Exhibition on Tour @ Golden Event Center/Golden Masonic Lodge

There are only two days left—today and tomorrow—to see the traveling exhibit on the American Revolution. (If you've never seen the Masonic Lodge on 10th Street, that's another incentive to visit!)

The Mount Lookout Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution and the American Battlefield Trust are excited to feature the American Revolution Experience at the Golden Event Center from November 4 - November 11, 2025.

The innovative pop-up exhibition includes display panels and interactive digital kiosks that use storytelling, illustration, technology and unique artifacts and primary accounts to connect modern audiences with the people and places that shaped the birth of our nation.

This free community exhibit is hosted by the Golden chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Battlefield Trust.

Mon-Friday 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Sat / Sun 12:00 to 4:00 p.m.

2-3PM Virtual: Active Minds Monday

Today’s theme: Primary Colors in Music

Colors play a prominent role in our lives, influencing our thinking, inspiring our decision-making, and impacting our moods. Musicians have long made connections between colors and music, using color as a metaphor for emotion or lyrics to describe specific color instances with a deeper meaning. Participate with Active Minds as we explore the primary colors in music: blue, yellow, and red, with many musical samples along the way.

5:30PM GURA Board Meeting @ City Hall

Nazarene Church - 17398 W 16th Ave (map) - Photo by Patrick Klein

Tonight, the Golden Urban Renewal Authority will discuss the "Nazarene Plan Area Conditions Survey." The report concludes that the church and the single family home on the back of the property constitute "a slum." With that designation, GURA can establish a new Urban Renewal area and build 47 units of affordable housing on the property. According to the survey, which appears on pp. 14-35 of the meeting packet, the developer has already been selected and is under contract.

They will then review their budget for 2026 (pp. 8-12).

Finally, they will go into executive session (no cameras, no public) to discuss "real property located on West Colfax Ave. and between Corporate Drive and Interplaza West," where they plan to build 44 units of affordable housing.

The meeting will be recorded and available to watch at your convenience on the Agendas and Meetings page on the City of Golden website.

Golden History: Jailbreak

The Sheriff’s Residence and Jefferson County Jail (1913 – 1963) stood at 16th and Washington

The November 10, 1927 Colorado Transcript described a daring escape from the County Jail. There was an opening that normally used to pass food from the kitchen to the jail. The opening was only 18″ x 6-1/2″–far too small for a grown man to pass through. As it happened, one of the prisoners that week was a 14 year old boy. He covered himself in soap and his fellow prisoners pushed him through the opening. The boy then found the key in the sheriff’s desk and released the others.

The prisoners–a bootlegger, three chicken thieves, and the boy (charged with “taking property") stole the Sheriff’s car (a Rickenbacker). They drove it as far as southwestern Colorado before running it into a telephone pole. After that, they stole another car and fled the state.

A week later, the group attempted to rob a store in Arizona. One of the men was shot and put in a hospital under guard. The other four were brought back to the jail in Golden. They were recharged with greater crimes and sent to the state penitentiary. The 14 year old boy was sent to the State Industrial School on South Golden Road.
