Golden History: Historic Floods

Clear Creek flood during the 1930s – – Golden History Museum Collection

The June 26, 1941 Colorado Transcript described the flood that had occurred the previous weekend. Two cloudbursts in rapid succession caused Clear Creek to go over its bank on the north side. The streets flooded, large rocks were deposited in yards, and basements filled with water.

Several drowned animals were deposited on Coors property when the water receded, including a deer, three cows, and a bear. A freight bridge and a Tramway bridge near Coors were both swept away.

The railroad was being removed from Clear Creek canyon at that time, and the work train used for pulling up the track was marooned when the track between the engine and Golden was washed out.

Bad as all this sounds, it was not one of the worst floods in Golden’s history. Our most damaging floods have occurred when Tucker Gulch has filled with water and water has thundered down into Clear Creek.

Three people died in this 1896 flood, when a house next to Tucker Gulch was swept away and its occupants were killed – Golden History Museum Collection – enlarge
This flood in 1948 washed away three houses and five bridges – Golden History Museum Collection – enlarge
This 1965 flood spread over 17 blocks and damaged 69 residences, three railroad bridges and four street bridges – Golden History Museum Collection – enlarge
