The November 2, 1916 Colorado Transcript announced that the Colorado School of Mines would be offering a 4-week course for prospectors.

All the courses will be of the most practical nature. The department of geology will give instruction in common minerals and rocks and in prospecting geology. Elementary chemistry will be _given-ln a laboratory specially fitted for the use of prospectors. The principles of ore-dressing, assaying and the more common metallurgical processes will be explained by means of lectures and laboratory demonstrations in the department of metallurgy. The mining department will offer courses in placer and lode mining and in the location of mining claims. A more extensive course in safety engineering and first aid work will be given this year. The only fee for the entire course is two dollars.

This was the third year that this "short course" had been offered. About half of the participants lived in Jefferson County. The rest of the students came from all over the United States. Local businesses and homeowners benefitted because the students rented rooms and patronized restaurants.
