The Stewards of Golden Open Space have two walks scheduled this month.
Magic Mountain - August 15th
The Magic Mountain Archaeological site, located in a protected valley between the foothills and the hogback, offers a unique opportunity to study thousands of years of Native American life along the Front Range. The setting provided water plus an abundance of animal and plant resources for the early inhabitants.
Learn about this site with Archaeologist Meg Van Ness on August 15th at 10:00 am. This field trip will provide a summary of the results of the past excavations, what was learned about the early peoples who lived there, and a look at some of the plants they may have used.

Geology/History Walk in Kinney Run - Aug 23rd
The high ridge along Kinney Run, known as Eagle Ridge, is part of the Dakota hogback that extends southward to Colorado Springs. The vertically tilted sandstone layers, seen here, are rocks of the Dakota Group with underlying Morrison Formation shale to the west. In Golden and at Dinosaur Ridge near Morrison, these rocks have unique and world-famous dinosaur, bird, and crocodile tracks and bones as well as fossil leaves and wood preserved in the sandstone layers. Eagle Ridge was mined for clay in the past.
