Golden History Moment
Every year, Golden does a spectacular job with its holiday lighting. The residents enjoy it, and there’s a general belief that it also attracts shoppers from outside the community. We hire a lighting company to hang all those lights, and they start the process in September. In the 1970s, we were a little more amateur in our decorating efforts.
The November 17, 1970 Golden Transcript invited people to come downtown and help hang the downtown Christmas decorations. “Persons who are free that day and can help with the brightening of the Avenue should contact the Chamber office.”
The Golden Jaycees took the lead on the decorating, and Coors contributed the equipment to help them reach the arch and light poles.
In 1973, the nation was in the grips of the Energy Crisis, so the decorations went up but there were no holiday lights that year. In the same vein, the School of Mines removed every other light bulb from the M on Mount Zion that year.
